Default Someone explain HDMI passthrough?

I was at Circuit City and Im looking @ a Onkyo receiver that iis 7.1 and has Hdmi pass through. I asked the guy at circuit city if this would allow me to use the uncompressed audio feature on my Blurays and he was like (in a real dumb voice) yeah i guess . . . . Anyways the player is $299 but before i buy it i wanna know if this will allow me to use the uncomressed audio that everyone is raving about?

HDMI passthrough will basically acts as a video switcher. There is no audio decoding to be done.

It depends. The PS3 is performing the TrueHD & probably DTS HD MA decoding itself, so you'll benefit with any hdmi receiver, you do not need to find a receiver that decodes them. The upcoming Samsung BD-P1400 on the other hand will send the info through hdmi and then the receiver will need to know how to decode them.

So really, what you need depends on what Blu-ray player you have, if you can save some dollars on the receiver or not.

There are now four CEs making next-gen receivers with HDMI inputs and TrueHD/HDMA decoding: Onkyo, Pioneer, Sony and Samsung. Onkyo and Sony are covered on posts in this forum so far. Google the rest!

I'd steer away from those for a few more months. Many complaints about a popping noise coming thru the speakers and the receivers. People have been returning them like crazy.

As much as I dislike the "attitude" of the site, check out avs.com for some decent receiver suggestions. I've got the Onkyo 805 and I love it. No popping here.

Thats what I like to hear. I was supposed to buy the 805 when it came out but paused because I've read several threads on people having popping issues. Hopefully that'll all get straightened out.

Okay...I've been looking for a correct response.(Best Buy/CC employees let's not go there!)...I have a PS# for Blu Ray purposes(for now) and an Onk 605. I watched Ghost Rider a while back and I'm not getting the 'TrueHD' Display on my recv. I have the 1.3 HDMI connection and it reads 'Mutichannel'. I was told that's not a 'true' TrueHD signal...help!

Do you have the PS3 audio set to bitstream? If you have it set to linear, it will dislpay Multichannel and the PCM light will come on.
