As long as you are happy knowing you were happily ripped off buying extremely overpriced cables, all the more power to you. Not everyone is though.

I'm sure they are, but have you ever tried Monoprice HDMI cables? I assure you, you will see absolutely no difference between them and Monster, and you'll spend about about 5-10 blu-rays worth of $$ less. You're kidding yourself if you think you're getting anything more out of Monster cables. But, as long as you are happy.

Why don't you send me a few of your Monster cables for some "evaluation." They do have nice resale value...

Default Expensive HDMI cables

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong section.

My Dad has just brought a whole new set up including a 60inch Pioneer plasma and a Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-ray Player. While in the electrical shop, the sales bloke told him that to get the best out of his new equipment he will need to buy high end HDMI cables.

I told him that as the signal is digital there isn't much benefit from having a reasonably priced cable compared to the expensive ones that the salesman was trying to get him to buy.

Am I correct in thinking this? Or was I talking total rubbish?

I just picked up 2 HDMI cables from Amazon (through Eforcity) for $1.26/ea. What an incredible difference from the component cables/connections I was using!! It's unbelievable the difference in sound and video quality. I'm not sure if there would be significant differences between these and Monster's HDMI cables, for instance, but I'm very satisfied and they have excellent reviews.

Thanks, thats what I thought. If the Blu Ray player and TV are quite far apart ie more than 3 metres and you need a longer cable, would that make any difference

I think that you'll only need to worry about signal strength if you're going > 8 meters (~24 feet).

Well, no, that's not entirely correct. It really depends on how the HDMI cable is made. You are correct in thinking that just because it is expensive doesn't make it truly better.

However, how are they made? Compare and contrast a HDMI you might find from Wal - Mart compared to a top of the line one. I say this because I have several devices which use an HDMI cable and I can tell you that I've purchased a cheap one, a Monster Ultimate, and a Pscyclone for one of my PS3s.

I can tell you that the Monster and Pscyclone delivered the best pictured because they were made better. When I say better I mean the cable was protected and covered in an extra layer that the Wal - Mart cable was not covered in which prevents distortion in the sound and picture.

But, you'll also see higher priced HDMI cables depending on the length of the cable itself. Depending on how long you need it, could drive the price up.

But if your device is right there with your tv, you should be fine with the 4.

Some have said on this forum digital is digital, digital in, digital out. That's true in theory. You can be sure 1's and 0's going in will be the same 1's and 0's going out if the lengths of HDMI cable are under 4 - 5 meters. A no name generic brand vs cheap Monprice vs mid price Monster vs your overpriced $100 / ft esoteric cable will all perform about the same. This is true especially for the current specs for 1080p signals supported by Blu-ray. However that's not saying that such cable will be future proof. Test's have already shown that 1440p signals or higher resolution will be putting high demands on HDMI cable construction and quality and that's when you might be better off going Monster Cable or some esoteric brand X.

Interesting articles. I wonder why the Monoprice 25 ft did so well in the top one and not the second? Some people here seem to swear by Monoprice and I was considering them for my longish 25 foot run.

Digital is 0 and 1s but all the 0 and 1s have to make to the other side and in the right sequence. I work with digtal signals and trust me a crappy cable can mess things up. So the argument that its digital, its works or it dosn't isn't exactly true.

I have a Monster 1000 series 6ft HDMI cable, top of the line cord that shows no difference in PQ/AQ over my 6ft $3.85 Monoprice cable.

Bottom line, it shouldn't make a noticable difference.

there is no noticeable difference i went from using monster to using monoprice, i cannot tell any diff in AQ/PQ, i think anyone that says otherwise is trying to justify their spending $100 on a $3 cable

when my $5 monoprice cable fails me in the future with 1440p, i'll buy the new monoprice cable to replace it, most likely another $5 cable that supports whatever it needs to support.

or i can spend hundreds now and say i'm ready for the future.
