Would it really matter that much if it's an excellent 2K upscale? With the way some of these upscales look, I'm not complaining at all.

Yes. Because 4k finishes are better period. It is not even an argument. Can some 2k finishes be "good enough"? Yes. But ultimately we shouldn't be settling for "good enough". I'll still buy it. But i want my monies worth!

Well I think we're still getting our money's worth.

IMO a movie's visual style and intended look also play a major part in the end result we're seeing on UHD.

Hence why I pefer Pacific Rim, The Shallows and John Wick 2 over Jason Bourne, ID: Resurgence or Allegiant.

Totally agree. This whole notion of 4K DI and 2K DI has been overblown. Allied is another 4K DI and doesn't look as good as some 2K DI.

I agree with both of you guys. There are some great looking 2K finishes as well as 4k, but I'm happy we're getting more release every day. It looks like it's going to be a great second half of 2017, and a great 2018 as far as releases go. With all of the movies coming out in the fall, I might have to cancel Christmas in my house.

What you're doing here is cherry picking without realizing it. Youre comparing the best 2k upscales to the worst native 4k movies. But what your missing is what's in the middle.

Most moves with 4k DIs are impressive, except a few (that u mentioned).

Most movies with 2k DIs have not been very impressive (with the exception of a few that you mentioned).

Bottom line, quite a few 2k movies are held back by the 2k finish and would look better had the 4k workflow been consistent through out. Look at the native 4k movies that are considered reference, they have an "it" factor that the good 2k movies are still missing. Revenant, Sully, Sicario, Billy Lynn.

Wait til Dunkirk comes out. It's going to sh*t on every 2k movie out there and probably most 4k movies too.

Well tbh I might have noticed I was cherry picking when selecting those 2K titles.

But my point is a 4K DI does not guarantee a fantastic UHD release, at least not in my book. And for the record I like how Jason Bourne, ID: Resurgence and Allegiant looked.

You say most 2K upscales have not been very impressive. Well agree to disagree I guess because I think most of them have been very impressive, at least to my eyes. I don't know, maybe I'm just easily impressed. Sure The Revenant, Sicario and Miss Peregrine look absolutely fan-tas-tic (don't have Sully and Billy Lynn)! But I wouldn't go as far saying those have an "it" factor that the "good" 2K ones are missing...

Bottom line for me, I personally am not judging UHD movies on whether they have a 2K or 4K DI, but rather going by their intended look and feel and how that has been translated to UHD by utilizing not just the resolution but the usage of HDR/WCG also.

I believe this makes the very first Focus Features title to be released in UHD.

yeah I'm not too happy about that - 'Kubo and the Two Strings' needed it's Dolby Atmos mix.

As to 'Atomic Blonde' - saw it this morning in Dolby Cinema - wow, just wow!!
