Talking Article: IMAX Is Moving Away From 3-D

http://www.thewrap.com/imax-moving-a...ng-preference/

So it sounds like a significant player in overall revenue stream for 3D ticket sales wants to move away from 3D.

For me, it's not that people are necessarily showing a preference for 3D, just that there isn't the content. There hasn't been a critically acclaimed, 'made for 3D' movie that's penetrated into the non-3D going market (80% of ticket sales were 3D) since Gravity, coming up to 4 years ago.

But this news deserves its own thread. Another nail in the coffin of a niche product the industry swore we'd all need!

It absolutely does deserve it's own thread. This may be the nail in coffin we've all been dreading.

I am already used to importing 3D blurays so they can kill it for good in the US for all I care, screw them!

Stop charging an unnecessary premium for 3D showings, and you'll see attendance numbers improve. It's not rocket science.

The problem actually is the downward spiral. Less 3D box office presence -> less revenue from 3D -> less incentive to make 3D movies -> less 3D movies -> less 3D blu-rays -> less revenue from 3D blu-ray -> less 3D box office presence -> . . .
Downward it goes. Don't like any developments that may reduce production of 3D movies.

I don't like importing 3D blu-rays. I do it only because they ain't available here.

Good.

Last time I saw an IMAX 3D movie (Ghost in the Shell), the 3D was really good, but screw those IMAX 3D glasses.

Almost made my eyes bleed, I swear.

Default IMAX to do more 2D Only Screenings citing "Clear Preference" from U.S.

This frustrates me as a 3d fan but some of the stuff they are trying to do like catering more to movies actually shot with IMAX cameras is a much welcome and needed change. I know at this point I'm in the minority with my love of 3D but I don't think we've seen the last of the format and the tech has improved so much (especially post conversions) in a rather miraculously short amount of time that it would be a complete waste to get rid of it at this point.

What about 3D non-IMAX screenings? How are those doing? Also, it seems that 3D is doing fine internationally.

Most films available in 3d in America do 40 to 60% of there business in there opening week from 3d (not aware of stats for week on week after that). It isn't going away, hopefully we get less but more considered 3d efforts which can then be built upon.

I think that's the key. How many 'made for 3D' live-action movies have we had so far this year? One (GotG2)? Two (Transformers)?

Don't worry ... Avatar 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 ... will bring 3D back to IMAX ...

Where is this mythical international market you speak of & I've love to see some statistics to back that up. Considering manufacturers are dropping 3D technology like a lead balloon for 8K.

I'm talking more about theatrical than for home viewing.

I'd like to see more 2D screenings in IMAX. Not against 3D but rarely the extra cost is worth it to me. I thought Galaxy of the Guardians 2 and Ghost in the Shell were great in 3D though. T2 in 3D might be good but I'd rather see a 2D IMAX screening with killer sound.
