Cancelled my pre-order based on the reviewer's comments about the presentation of the archival supplements as I don't want to have to keep older copies around just to view them in decent quality. If they correct this I will reconsider a purchase.

I wonder if they'll issue any replacement discs? It's an issue of going from 29.97 sd to 23.98, unless they are using the mgm extras masters from Europe (pal) and that would lead to even bigger frame/field issues. There's lots of software out there that does a great job with these kinds of conversions. It's a shame no one caught it before the discs went out.

You could potentially get some of the clipped highlights back (similar to Independence Day and several others) but whoever does it needs to go back to the original scan and start over.

I read Quentin Tarantino recently saw a screening for a new 4K remaster of Fistful at Cannes (not sure if it's Kino's) and he said it looked nice but he was upset that Cannes didn't ask tell him ahead of time so he could bring his print instead.

I got my copy for around $9.50 (8 euros) after selling the 2014 version w restored sound and I think I will be more happy with 1 disc in my collection than more taking shelf space (gave the previous MGM disc to my dad a few years ago)

Question: What are the prints you prize most? Tarantino: I have all three Sergio Leone Clint Eastwood movies in I.B. Technicolor. Magnificent-looking. I just saw the DCP restoration of A Fistful of Dollars at Cannes. I introduced it. I felt like I was watching a DVD. I said, "Why didn’t you ask me to bring my ****ing print?" They said, ‘Well, there was three extra minutes in this." I said, "I’ve seen that movie a million times and I didn’t notice those extra minutes. I just noticed that it looked like a ****ing DVD." http://www.laweekly.com/publicspecta...beverly-cinema |

I haven't come across any article where he states the DCP looked nice.

“I just had a really uncomfortable experience in Cannes this last year, because they had the 50th anniversary of ‘Fistful Of Dollars’ ” said the director, who was invited to help present the film. “They showed this 4K restoration. I have an IB Technicolor, a beautiful Techniscope print of ‘Fistful Of Dollars’ —I could have brought that. Anyway, we have all the big speeches, we all talk, it’s the closing night of the Cannes Film Festival, and I sit down…this is a movie I’ve seen a million times. Did it look nice? Yeah, it looks nice, but my laserdisc looks nice, my DVD looks nice, alright? We’re not talking about nice. I was depressed the whole screening because I’m sitting in the Grand Palais, the big house, and I felt like I should be pointing the remote control at the screen and hitting play. I was like, where’s the f’ing menu?”
“Is that fine in my home? Yeah, absolutely it’s fine in my home, I don’t think about it. But in the Palais, I felt like there was some glass between me and the movie that wouldn’t have been there had we shown the 35mm print,” Tarantino continued, saying the experience made him “double down” on his programming approach at the New Beverly. Man, I love Tarantino. I really feel the same way about special screenings. It feels so strange going to the big classic movie theaters and seeing DCP's...I mean, they look nice, but it just kind of kills the atmosphere for me. I recently went to a screening of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly at a local classic theater that shows 35mm prints, thinking it would be a print, and they instead showed the digital version, and it was just disappointing all around.
