Dubtitles are incredibly annoying.

I do understand Japanese. But I seem to recall that for the most part, the Disney Audio is closer than some of the original audio, so it should be moot.

That makes no sense, so no it's the same.

It really is when you see a character speak, but see no subtitle for it. And then see characters not speaking, and see a subtitle for speech. Because the dubs don't actually match. There are more then a few moments in Castle in the Sky this is glaringly obvious.

I think he's trying to say that some of the newer dub scripts don't take as much liberties with the translation as some of the older ones.

I prefer to have both different. If I can't stand the some of the translation in the dub or the quality of the dub (Billy Bob in PM, ) then I like to have the option to switch to subtitles that don't repeat the annoying translation.

Speaking of waves; I finally got around to watching my Taiwanese Ocean Waves the other day, and I learned that the main character guy is Kamille Bidan

Spirited Away already cheaper than it's ever been while owned by Disney, ahh it's a good feeling.

- Nausicaa (burnt-in dub credits)
- Ponyo (lossy Japanese audio)

Been looking at finally these all on blu (I had some on DVD previously) based on Svenges guide. Is that all that is really wrong with these? Because if so its worth it to save the 5 or so dollars to me.

Rest of the first wave hit $17.99 on Amazon.

Just to confirm?:
Current Disney discs with dubtitles = Princess Mononoke, Kiki, Castle in the Sky
Totoro (?), Nausicaä (?)

Did Mononke have dub titles? Those didn't seem as overt as Castle in the Sky's.

If IIRC Princess Mononoke had normal subs on the original DVD release (under Miramax right?) and then later on Disney BDs is when they went with dubtitles.

Just a reminder then Dubtitles:

Kinki, Castle, Princess Mono, and Pom Poko

Would it be too much trouble to post the features of the rest of the Japanese Ghibli Blu-rays? At least the ones GKIDS is re-releasing, so we can have an idea of what to possibly expect.

Actually it is "Japanese release promo" (it was partially included on old Grave DVD). And no, it's not included on Disney's release and unfortunately won't be on GKids release obviously because of licensing concerns.

I was just looking at GKIDS' twitter page, and they have FINALLY detailed 8 of the upcoming releases.
https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/statu...23212935548928
https://twitter.com/GKIDSfilms/statu...22754380689408
They all come with an 8 to 12-page booklet, and they all claim to have "new transfers". ( I'm not really sure most of them could look much better than already do)
The bonus features are largely the same for most of them, No real mention of new subtitles, but that doesn't there aren't any.
Castle in the Sky has an additional audio track but it doesn't clarify if it is the extended score or not. (It just says Joe Hisaishi's original score)

The default English dub on "Castle in the Sky" has the extended orchestral score, while the original Japanese audio and the additional English dub track listed in the Twitter announcement both use the original synthesizer score. As for new subtitles, previous Twitter statements from GKIDS said that they were going to fix the "dubtitle" issue that some Disney releases (e.g. Castle in the Sky, Kiki, Mononoke) had.

I appreciate the effort. I was just looking for this. Until about 30 minutes ago I had never heard of "GKIDS" nor did I have any idea they were re-releasing all the Ghibli movies. If the transfers are basically identical, I'll have to forego any new commentaries or featurettes. I don't think I can afford to double dip on them after buying all the Disney ones.

If you could do me one favor, could you change red to another color? I'm having trouble seeing the difference between black and red on my display. An alternative would be to get rid of the colors and suffix each line with something like [Disney only] or [GKids only]. Thanks.
