Default Universal Remote with the PS3

Hey guys, new here. Sorry if this isnt the right section to post this, but I need some help. I was going to buy a universal remote for my setup (Harmony 520). I know the PS3 is bluetooth, and most universal remotes don't have that capability. What would I need to buy to make my PS3 compatible with the Harmony 520? Is it some type of adapter that changes it into RF or IR? Thanks for the help!

There is the Bluwave adaptor from Nyko, which is about $15 on amazon. It won't power on or off the PS3 though. There is also the IR2BT and Toothfairy adapters which can be found online and will power on/off equipment, but it is a bit expensive.

I have a PS3 Toothfairy, and I've got absolutely nothing but good things to say about it. It is very easy to setup, is easily programmed into your harmony remote and works flawlessly. It even turns the PS3 on/off and can be used with Harmony "Activities."

Well worth the $ in my opinion.

You can see a what it looks like in this picture:

Are you talking about the one with the remote included? Will that adapter is comes with work with another remote?

The Blu Wave sounds great, but not being able to power on/off the PS3 is a bummer. Sony should have came out with their own adapter by now...

Well they should have included IR in the first place...

So true. The only other option is buying the Sony remote, but since it's bluetooth you'll still need another remote to control your components. There really is no good solution for cheap.

Agreed.

As BoschRock pointed out, the price of the PS3Toothfairy is pretty steep... but for anything else that's cheaper you have to make some sacrifices.

For me it was worth it just to pay a bit extra to have something that does everything I need it to do.

Now, if only I could figure out a better way to charge my Dualshock 3's.

The Nyko Blu-wave remote can be used to turn off the PS3 (as of a PS3 firmware update a couple of months ago). There is now a menu item on the PS3 to turn it off. From the XMB its under Users >>> Turn Off System

I've been using the Nyko Blu-wave USB adapter (not the included remote) along with a Harmony 880 for quite some time with two PS3s and they work great. The Harmony data base has it listed as a device under game console that plays DVDs and instead of selecting a Playstation you select Nyko Blu-wave as the device. I don't mind not having a power on capability since I'm normally going to be inserting a disc anyway.

I use the Blu Wave adaptor with my Harmony 880, and the powering on issue is no big deal at all. Really. You've got to put the Blu-ray disc in anyway, don't you?

Also, you can now turn the unit off with the remote, because Sony added a power button on the XMB menu. It's truly a cost-effective solution, and it works great.

While I somewhat agree, the fact is my wife and kids aren't as technology-smart as me, so being able to turn on the PS3, TV, and receiver with one button, then put in the Blu-ray which automatically starts... that's about as easy as it gets. Also, it'll be nice to press the power button and EVERYTHING turn off instead of having to turn off the PS3 first. Also, the Blu Wave has a horrible response time. I took mine back to Best Buy yesterday and they totally understood and agreed when I said it was a crappy product. To me, it's worth the extra money for a product that does exactly what it's supposed to and is fully supported by Harmony remotes.

I've been extremely happy with my IR2BT. It has never let me down and was a snap to setup with my Harmony One.

I would highly recommend it.

My issue with the PS3 blurtooth remote is that it is not backlit. Since I usually watch movies in a very dim to dark room, I could not see what buttons I was pushing.
