Quote:
Mainichi: It’s been half a year since the Nintendo Switch launched, why (are the shortages are still ongoing)?

Nintendo: We have never expected the Nintendo Switch to sell this much. You have to understand Nintendo doesn’t own the factory (making Nintendo Switch), as production is handled by another company in China. It’s easy to increase the production capacity of the factory. The finished product needs to be delivered from the harbor to the rest of the world, and rushing shipping is an extremely difficult thing to do.

We must also increase orders for parts that are made by many other different companies, and these are the same companies that also supply components for Apple’s upcoming iPhone, data centers, and many other products. Because of this, it’s difficult for these companies to guarantee timely delivery of our orders, hence production falls behind schedule.
So no change.

I continue to wonder what sales would look like without the shortage.

They've still got a couple of months to get their act together. Otherwise the holiday season is going to be an ugly scene.

You would have to think that surely Nintendo have be stockpiling units from every batch from day one in preparation for the huge Mario/Christmas period.

I'm guessing they're stockpiling for the Mario launch, and there will be consoles to be had on launch day and shortly after. But after that, I wouldn't be surprised if they're still in short supply until 2018.

It will probably be scarce until well into 2018. As above, they're in competition with Apple for parts and Apple likely has iPhone 8 and/or 7s coming out so that's only going to intensify competition through winter.

Also doubt they're holding units back for holidays. That wouldn't make sense when they're selling out currently. Sooner hardware is sold he sooner people are buying games and accessories and that's where the biggest profits are.

Well I don't have to worry about the holiday season. I have two Switches put away in the closet to give as gifts.

Maybe but I wouldn't expect them to eat expedited shipping to suddenly get them into stores for the holiday. Wouldnt they need to start shipping by boat now for the holidays?

This gets thrown around a lot and I find it hard to believe the two product lines share any similarities in parts, let alone enough to cause shortages. It's probably more of them fighting for manpower to get the damn things built more than lack of parts.

It's the memory they are short on and is the same flash memory that goes in phones.

It's not a rumor a Nintendo official said in the interview Diesel posted above that competition with Apple for parts is part of the shortage. But yes it does come down to lack of manpower and factory space to make those parts. Underestimating demand is the bigger issue though.

Nintendo had no choice but to be conservative with their estimates for the Switch.

They were coming off of the biggest failure in their history. They had overestimated by MILLIONS for the Wii U, and shareholders were not happy when Nintendo revised their forecast and ended up losing millions.

They had no choice but to aim low with the Switch because if they had the same issue as they did with the Wii U then shareholders trust in them would have been completely destroyed and they would have been left in a determinant state of bowing.

I can't help but think that the next Nintendo hardware will be AR based. I have a really strong hunch.

You mean like the start of Mario&Rabbids

I can see them going somewhere with AR just like MS are, but I don't think it will be for a while.

Ishihara from The Pokémon Company did mention the Switch when talking about AR and future Pokémon games.

“Switch is just one of the possible platforms. I think we will open up more possibilities from all these platforms. Playing in a more realistic way should be possible.”

It's great for the younger gamers but I hope they don't neglect/abandon the traditional gamers who just want a bit of handheld gaming when kicking back after work. I don't really fancy having to go out every night to catch this or geolocate that. I'm too old for that nonsense.

Two more larger games revealed; Resident Evil Revelations games will take up 13GB and 26GB respectively.

I saw five at Target three days ago. I tend to see them in spurts, but when I do, it's usually 5-6. I know that people still never see them, but at least around here, I see them regularly. I'm sure that will stop once November rolls around.

You actually like that controller? In my opinion, having the right thumb stick above the buttons is the worst design decision ever.
