Agreed that Creature has mostly strong 3D and some very strong 3D shots that are on the verge of being uncomfortable to watch but not quite.
The underwater 3D scenes with the vegetation; amazing in 3D, and reportedly filmed in/on the Universal Studios pond.

3D: 10/10

I didn't notice that. By the way, thanks for suggesting to take a look at the 3D pictures in that other 3D section where you posted stills from the 3D movies. That convinced me to buy Creature and Bubble 3D. Thanks!

Also there was one shot where there was no 3D, just a flat image of the guy underwater.

The Creature from the Black Lagoon never looked as awesome as it does in 3D. I saw Revenge of the Creature in anaglyph red/cyan 3D years ago, but this is the way to see 3D IMO, on a 3D HDTV.

Excellent 3D in this one! Plentiful pop-outs, great use of depths and excellent framing & placement of cameras to provide best possible 3D layering. The movie itself is quiet good and watchable!

Universal Studios Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

Creature from the Black Lagoon just got a new release. Has anyone checked it out to see if it is an improvement over the first 3D release which had some issues with some shots. Or is it the exact same transfer as the first?

Probably in preparation for an announcement regarding the sequel?

Best Buy has the new 3D steelbook version of this. It came out a couple weeks ago. No idea if it's the same disc from before.

I didn't see anything about 3D in the description, but I would bet (figuratively) it's the same disc in a new fancy package.

It's definitely 3D. Says it on the back. I'll post a link to another users unboxing video on here but it's the UK version.

Based on the info from the back of the packaging, it looks identical to the earlier releases, just a new case and disc art. The Wolfman, also.

At least it looks cool!

Sadly a lot of the biggest issues with the 3D in CftBL can't really be fixed without going back to one eye and doing a 2D-3D conversion. A huge portion of the movie suffers from the fact that the shutters on the two lenses were not quite synchronized, so during motion (especially fast motion) the positions of objects onscreen don't match between the eyes. It's an issue present to varying degrees throughout the movie. Some people barely seem to notice but for me it's extremely distracting and sometimes uncomfortable.

Tarantino's New Beverly Cinema just posted a montage of their October schedule, which includes a clip of Creature from the Black Lagoon in anaglyph 3D. If indeed they screen the film in anaglyph, it'll be the first time I've heard of the theater screening anything in 3D.

Here's the montage, Creature clip is at 2:12.

If Bryn Mawr is screening the same anaglyph print as the New Bev, you are not missing anything.

As happy as I am to see any theater taking a chance on 3D, especially a theater I respect as much as the Bev, this was easily the worst theatrical 3D I've ever seen. Almost every shot suffered from severe ghosting and misalignment, and the print was inverted. Thankfully the glasses were paper and easy to reverse, but there was no fixing the ghosting or misalignment. Some of the underwater scenes were still impressive, but most of the dialogue-centric scenes were unwatchable because the actors' faces were half a foot higher in the left eye vs the right. I thought such alignment drift wasn't possible with the anaglyph prints. Would the print have had the offset baked-in from its initial printing, or can anaglyph prints drift over time as well?

It was heartbreaking to see some of the best pop-outs of the Golden Age light up the New Bev's screen, and to hear crickets from the audience because the image was too ghosted, misaligned, and inverted to work for human eyes.

I've never appreciated 3D Film Archive's quality control more than I have today.

sorry to hear about that. That print should've been retired years ago.

If they want to run some 35mm 3-D, they'd do better to get in touch with Harry Guerro. His Silver-Age 3-D fests were great fun.

There's only one 3D blu ray version and it will be the same no matter which pressing you get. I'd suggest to just buy the Creature from the Black Lagoon: Complete Legacy Collection which will also come with Revenge of the Creature and the unfortunately 2D-shot Creature Walks Among Us.
