SUSPIRIA 4K PLANS UNVEILED BY CULTFILMS

In 1977 SUSPIRIA stunned cinemagoers around the world. Now, forty years later, CultFilms is proud to terrify audiences once again with the dazzling 4K restoration of Dario Argento's groundbreaking masterpiece.

Italian horror auteur Dario Argento unleashed the ultimate cult film with his visionary symphony of terror, SUSPIRIA. Ballet student Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) arrives at a prestigious dance academy in Freiburg, a school plagued by gruesome and supernatural happenings. Soon students begin to die in horrific circumstances – is Suzy next, and can she uncover the academy’s sinister secret before it’s too late?

Abandoning the black gloves of the giallo in favour of a witchy brew of magic and murder, Argento carved a Baroque nightmare, saturated with expressive colour and punctuated by shocking violence.

Considered the most famous Italian horror film of all time for its vivid, groundbreaking style and jaw-dropping bloodshed, SUSPIRIA now returns for its fortieth anniversary to assault audiences once more.

Fans will have the opportunity to crowd-fund a very special limited edition UHD and Blu-ray dual-format SteelBook (pictured) of the SUSPIRIA 4K restoration. The crowd-funding campaign will go live on 30 October, just in time for Halloween! This will be a limited numbered edition including a slate of specially-commissioned extras exclusive to this SteelBook release and available nowhere else in the world. CultFilms will release their 4K restoration of SUSPIRIA in a Blu-ray and DVD dual-format edition with slipcase on 14 November 2017.

Extras will include:

- Audio Commentary by critics Kim Newman and Alan Jones
- An interview with Dario Argento and Claudio Simonetti
- New Extra: The 4K Restoration Process
- New Extra: Dario Argento Presents his Suspiria
- New Extra: Dario Argento Introduction

I saw the Synapse one in theaters last night, and it was breathtaking. From what I read, their restoration looks better than the one this is sourced from.

It will be interesting to see what the exclusive extras on the crowd funded steelbook will be. I already pre-ordered the Synapse blu-ray, but I might be willing to bite on another edition of Suspiria. I mean, I know a guy who already owns 4 different USA blu-rays of Wonder Woman and he told me he plans to purchase and/or already pre-ordered 8 (!) exclusive import blu-ray steelbooks/digibooks of WW as well so I guess only owning two blu-rays of Suspiria isn't too excessive.

I'm confused (again). Why exactly would someone do this?
They must know Synapse is releasing a new edition, why would they bother?

Forgive me; just read some earlier posts with a clearer head and the "money talks" and "some want all" scenarios seem to come to play.
For the life of me I still don't understand the rationale but then I'm not rich....

The difference (if I understand what I read about the Suspiria release correct) CultFilms will be releasing the 4K UHD no matter what, but thy use a crowdfunding platform for those that want the SteelBook (please correct me if I have misunderstood completely, too tired so I might have read/understood this wrong!)

The "crowd funded" approach is a business model where the end users and consumers directly fund the enterprise, in contrast to a traditional business model where the producer gets venture capital and business loans to fund the development.

BTW this is a special edition and they may produce special extras unique to this release.

The indigogo crowd funding approach is perfectly okay for products that you know can and will be made. (If the product has a challenging or hazy development roadmap that runs into development roadblocks and legal issues, then it could be stuck in development hell.) The business risk is that the manufacturing plant could burn down, or some unforeseeable event.

Why haven't synapse just released their 4k master on UHD. Seeing they have it in 4k already would make sense.

Or am I being stupid.

Would also mean more people would buy it is 4k UHD discs are regionless. Or is that the issue. They wouldn't want to be sued?

Seems like I DID read the press release wrong...

Read it more carefully now and it does look like the only way to get the 4K is to join the crowdfunded SteelBook release. Oh well, I never bought this on Blu-ray so it will hopefully be worth it to back that 4K SteelBook.

I don't think they would be sued for releasing a region free UHD as there is no region coding available... But if it is similar to DVD -> Blu-ray the rights to one doesn't automatically give the rights to the other, meaning that Synapse might only have the rights for Blu-ray/DVD but not UHD. Then again, I don't know if that is the way it work with Blu-ray -> UHD...

Should I be concerned about region coding if I get the 4K steelbook? I know by 'default' 4K is region-free, but a part of me is very wary about pre-ordering this without confirmation...

4K UHD is Region free by default
Blu-ray will be region B

This release will have exclusive extras
The more funds it raises everyone gains at no extra cost involved than what you already paid for the perk option you picked
