Except buying something digitally doesn’t mean you own it. You just own a liscense to watch the content. And there is a bigger chance of that liscense going away than there is of Netflix removing one of their own shows. Sense 8 will always be on Netflix as long as Netflix exists. That can’t be said for any other digital platform.

I wonder if this will be available for online order. I'm going to be away from a Target on October 17 and 18, and I'd prefer to have one waiting for me at home. It probably won't sell out in stores, though.

Related tangentially: Netflix is raising its prices starting October 19 via Mashable.

$9.99 plans become $10.99.
$11.99 plans become $13.99.

Standard definition plans (who are you people?!) stay at $7.99.

Heads up, this is a Gen 1 sized case. Assuming the width is long enough to fit a disc (kind've a given I'd think) the case is going to be a fair bit taller than a standard BD to achieve the desired VHS box look. That also means this guy's gonna be pretty thick too. Think Batman TAS season sized.

Yeah. Just cause it sounds like a cool idea doesn't mean it is. I actually hate this design cause I just wouldn't know what to do with it on a shelf. Wish there was a standard edition.

Well time to cancel Netflix after Stranger Things 2. Not like I really watch a lot of their movies these days. They have lost so much and the selection is just bad now. Really bad move to raise the price when the selection keeps getting worse.

Since its only exclusive to target and that means only available in US and that store. I find it very hard to believe such a High profile release we are Probably talking almost Game of Thrones popularity here. Not getting a normal retail release or a international release after this exclusive deal Expire would be really really out there. Right ?

It would be cool if when removing the slip we find the case was made to resemble a VHS tape, retro label and all. Then again, I could see a customer or two trying to jam the thing into their VHS machine. I still have a VHS/DVD combo myself. Rarely used, but I crank it up once in a while. Still have a lot of private VHS recordings from back in the day I like to watch from time to time.

All of that is Netflix Merchandise being sold through Target. Well played Netflix, well played.

They have their own merchandise line now.

Y'all are way overthinking this. Most likely a box with the poster & a standard Blu-ray case inside.

The standard def subscribers are the same ones that still purchase the DVD when the same title on Blu-ray is sitting right next to it and priced the same or only a dollar or two more. After all, we all know the DVD will look better than the Blu-ray on that brand new 4K TV.

Because DVDs still outsell Blu for most titles and this way they can have single inventory. For the week ending 9/23 for example, only 17 titles sold more on Blu than DVD, according to the HMM charts. And TV shows tend to do worse on Blu. For example, for the 10th season of The Big Bang Theory, the Blu share is only 18%, yet it was the 7th best selling title in physical media.

And putting both in the same box might encourage some people to finally upgrade to Blu: "Hey, I've got all these Blu-ray discs. Let's go to Walmart and buy a $79 Blu-ray player!"

In the U.S., DVD still has a 59.6% dollar share and a 74% unit share (YTD). Having said that, for the week ending 9/23, Blu-ray dollars were pretty close to DVD: $43.29 million for Blu vs. $45.32 million for DVD, but that's unusual.

But to some extent, it's all moot because the physical media business is slowly dying and becoming a niche format for collectors, much like vinyl LPs. The video physical media business was just under $11 billion in the U.S. in 2009 and it was only about $5.5 billion in 2016. 2017 will probably come in at around $4.4 billion. It's all going to be streaming. That doesn't mean that physical media disappears, but it's going to become more and more niche.

One of the long-term problems has been that it's a very hit driven business and only the biggest titles sell anything. For the week ending 9/23, the 2nd best selling Blu title sold only 10.7% of the #1 title. The 10th best selling title sold only 1.33% of what the #1 title sold. In 2016, the 100th best selling title sold a quarter of 1% (0.025%) of the #1 title. Consumers are not buying deep.

Is it too much to hope for some special features? I just want a commentary from the Duffer Brothers... that is all!

Its a dumb move to not make it available to retail stores or online like amazon. Or what about their international fans!
This cant be an exclusive forever right?

Depends on how much Target paid them for retailer exclusivity.
