That doesn't mean that everyone MUST prefer the EE over the Theatrical versions, but they are the director's preferred version, and I will only watch the EEs. |

No, the Theatrical versions were done to make the studios happy. They are so strict about theatrical release dates that PJ didn't have time to get his preferred vision to the screen. The studios also worried about each movie's run time being too long, since it would reduce the total number of showings per day since each EE film is about 3.5 hours long.

The EE's are basically for those people that want all the LotR they can get. People like me, that basically have the LotR movies playing in the background even when I'm cleaning my house.
![]() I can only hope that these Blu-ray editions will be for the fans, like the EE's (which were obviously designed for longtime fans of Tolkien's epic). But I'll always hold on to my EE DVD's... the packaging, the films, and the extras blow me away. |

Hopefully when the EE's are re-released for the Hobbit PJ will have dug up some more features and/or scenes for us. ![]() |

I had once thought I would hold off on buying the non-extended cuts of LOTR on Blu-ray, but after getting a projector I will definitely buy them. I just tried to sample some scenes from the DVD's and yikes, it looks pretty bad. Close ups aren't that bad but medium-wide shots are blurry and lack detail. So, I will definitely pick up the non-extended cuts...just wish they would release them sooner.

I'm personally hoping they go the King Kong route and include both versions of the films. I'll never watch the theatrical version, but I figure it would be the quickest way we'll get the EE on Blu-ray. If they only release the theatrical cut who knows when we'll get the EE.

PJ doesn't feel that any of the movies are his. He likes to think of them as being tolkiens. Not because he liked the TEs better. He says so at the very end of his ROTK EE commentary when the credits start to roll. |

You know, all we've been talking about mostly is the difference between the Extended Editions and the Theatrical Editions, and the truth of course is that none of us can know from this point what the studio(s) will do (speaking of which, will it be released by Warner Bros., since they now own New Line Cinema?), and so now I have started thinking the single most important thing to me, whichever release they give us (yes, I will buy the theatrical version if that's all they give us because they are wonderful films no matter what - hence my previous post), is that they simply do a good job on the video transfer. Can you imagine if they release this thing next fall and it sucks? I just want a 5-star PQ whatever the circumstances. I won't be paying $90 for a 3.5 or a 4.0 PQ...

My first post in these forums! Anyway I don't see why they can't just branch both the theatrical and extended editions on one disc (much like the limited edition DVDs and the upcoming King Kong release.) I'm guessing the reason they don't do that is purely $$$ but it'd make a lot more sense (is it even comfirmed that it will only be the TE releases? Nothing sounds definite yet.) Either way I cannot wait to see my favorite movies on blu!
