I love how Blade Runner 2049 captures a similar aesthetic to Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner, in that it shows us a futuristic world that is so vast that we only see one little slice of it, and there is no attempt to explain the rest.
If you create a richly detailed world, then there's no need to explain every little thing to people. The “tiny slice of a world” standpoint of a fictional story worked so well in Mad Max: Fury Road, and it works just as well in this film. For example, it's cool that there were references to a “blackout”, but there was no attempt to explain what that was all about. (I'm aware that there is an animated prequel short that delves into this, but I'd rather take this feature film on its own terms.) |

That may have been where the movie lost me. I liked it overall, but introducing a new subplot like that right near the end that seemed to be teasing another sequel was unforgivable. I want closure, not a cliffhanger.
It's ironic how this flick took so long building up to its final act only to fall apart once it finally got there. |

The closest film I think about which had a similar budget and dealt within the same genre is probably Minority Report which made around $358 million total. Just waiting on the weened figures of 2049 to see how it does opening overseas.

Yeah, I felt exactly the same way when I came out of the theater. It looks like they left some seeds planted in case they do a sequel. Not sure how I feel about that, though? I don't want to see a sequel. But at the same time, I am interested to see what happens to those certain groups of characters.

I did not get the impression that Blade Runner 2049 ended on with a “cliffhanger.”
I think that it ends with a perfect sense of closure by revealing just enough to plow forward with a self-enclosed tale. (See my above post.) The [Show spoiler] could lead to a sequel, sure, but it does not have to. After all, we are aware the entire time that there's [Show spoiler] so it's not exactly a big reveal.

Also, it seems like the word "cliffhanger" is thrown around a lot of the time ignoring what a "cliffhanger" actually is. |

Personally, I can't imagine a better executed final scene than what Denis delivered, just the right balance of acknowledging the past, delivering closure to the present and leaving a glimmer of hope for the future. |

I kind of figured this movie may not do the huge business some had expected... it is a 3 hour endeavor that isn't straight action, it is based on a movoe most ppl today have not seen.
I am, like all of us here, a huge movie nerd (trapped in a Jocks body) so i was anticipating this movie, but when i watched it, i always try and think about my close friends who are not AS into movies as I am, and i try and see a movoe from their eyes, because to me they represent joblo movie goer, and they would think this movie is boring, and by that metric, it doesnt play to the masses. I enjoyed it, but i need to see it again, because this movoe had so much to unpack that 1 viewing is not enough! |

Execution is everything, and in this film I couldn't help but to wonder if there's some intentional parallels between scenes like the
[Show spoiler] It's tastefully done and there is depth, so I don't consider it schlocky at all. A typical cyberpunk trope perhaps, but the best stories do different things with common tropes, and I think this movie did succeed in something different. It might be a cash-grab, but if they keep smart talent on-board, the payoff could be phenomenal. |

When a film of substance rolls into town, rest assured the clown car isn't far behind. No worries, Justice League is just around the corner.
With a number of sizable communities still hard hit by hurricanes, combined with the recent event in Las Vegas, anyone expecting boffo box office should find a seat on the aforementioned clown car. In 2017, walkouts mean nothing, as there is no shortage of people paying for one film and moseying around the multiplex until they get their money's worth. For a 3-hour film, people will walk-in and walk-out, to use the restroom, reply to a text, on and on and on. There's no end to it in a connected society. In fact, when a pack of moseys found themselves walking in during one of the innumerable trailers pre-BR 2049, they were shouted out by a rather large fellow with the classic, "These seats are reserved!" Ha ha ha. Shame Shame Shame. Speaking of trailers, we received trailers for:
