I still think it sux that BDA has let HD DVD back in the game. If the studios want to save their best titles for the holiday season they should consider releasing their "B" catalog now. We should be able to choose from titles such as Sin City, Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill 1& 2, Nemo, The Incredibles, etc. during this time rather than no or "D" catalog titles. Momentum is everything in this business. Heck, if it gets to 50/50 perhaps Block Buster will reconsider choosing Blu-ray as their only Hi Def format.

I think the VERY poor sales of the Universal flood indicate HD DVD is finished. Honestly. The BD studios have, quite understandably, taken the summer off. And it has had no effect.

HD DVD may have had a chance to let itself back in with loss leader hardware. But that didn't result in a any meaningful pop in software sales despite having far more releases in the last month.

What will happen when the Blu-ray media blitz and the blockbuster titles and the cheaper BD players and the PS/3 Xmas sales all kick in, in Q4?

HD DVD has NOTHING new going forward. They have the same price tactics that haven't worked. And they are going to be completely overwhelmed in summer blockbusters.

I do understand why people perceive the BDA as doing little. But, they are ABLE to do little now when doing a lot would be costly and they are still leading comfortably.

yes indeed it is...even without a Hit BD like POTC or Casino Royale we are still leading and the question is now what will happened next?

Shooter on the way ,300 BD on the way,Fifth element remastered are getting more people to buy this catalog title,New owners of PS3 and New 2nd generation blu-ray players

Sure the result will be outstanding...

Another question is in the beginning of the 4th Quarter of this year when Spiderman,POTC3,Cars gonna released? This is going to be the death of HD-DVD

Here comes some graphs for the sales stats from Nielse for this year:

This was their best chance to get over 40. I don't see BD going any lower than this again, ever. I predict next week we'll see closer to 70%. After that I don't think we'll ever see below 65%.

I believe what you've laid out above is "phase hydra". "Phase Hydra" is not the viral campaign one person over at AVMS tried to make it out to be (i.e. distorted) to win over the paranoid HD DVD fanatics at AVMS...

I think the Hollywood in Hidef is part of Hydra.

As you said, squabbling with AVS folk is not part of it ... that is a waste of resources

BTW, my stats site (see sig) features graphs of the videoscan percentages also these days...

And for the very curious I also have hddvdstats.com coming along. I didn't really have much desire to do it but it does allow for interesting comparisons. More as it happens...

Patience.

What's the point of going Profile 1.1 and BD-Live when you don't want to show your loyal supporters what they can do using a new title? What's the purpose of finalizing BD+ if you're not going to use it?

For the first question, I think all of the BD studios are experimenting with content, capacity and future players' functionalities. For the second question, you know Fox is not going to go HD-DVD anytime soon with just AACS.

Looking at Merlin's graphs contradicts what the HD DVD promo group said last week! I thought that HD DVD was gaining momentum, with sales increasing 20% and BD sales sliding?! Is Nielson lying?! Because we all know HD DVD wouldn't twist the truth

I didn't find any of the weekly comparisons of top high def title sales in this issue. I imagine that the space was used for the HME, but would be interested to see the breakdown. Anyone know where to find that information elsewhere?

Reading through the articles, the only thing I found annoying was the recap of Graffeo's session where Blu-ray was getting smacked around for not having high-def extras (I imagine we're all tired of hearing it). I hope this gets resolved very soon. Why feed the (small) flames of the opposition?

Gary, great post, but I want to add that it is also extremely showing to the studios and their owners. on slower weeks (like this one for BD) what is sold falls in two categories

new users and catch up. Both are extremely important in seeing trends. New users will need to catch up on older titles they want but did not buy because they did not have a player, it also means they will buy titles they want that will come out later.

Old users catching up is also a good sign, it means for the current population (and recent past) that they are willing to buy more then what they bought so far.

In essence this tends to show very definitely that BD has far more support and its support is growing much faster then HD DVD and what can be seen from the graphs.

I wonder if they don't do the top 10 since it shows that none of the new catalog releases are worth anything.

If it is comprised of the same old titles it is not really worth column space.
they have showed them in the past when the titles where only previous weeks. My guess is that there was just no place in the magazine and they consider it less important then anything else (especially since it is most likely a slow week)

The response I got was they didn't have time with all the EMA coverage and they probably won't put the old ones in next week's issue because by then they'll be old news.

I wish they'd still put them in.

Could you please ask them how Memento did as a percentage of the top selling title. That should at least answer the question definitively as far as whether Amazon is included.

Thanks,
Darin

darin, I think those numbers will come out next Friday. The price cut happened just last week.

I don't think The Fifth Element will do that well in Nielsen. I know it's selling well on Amazon but I think that's because it's about the only place one can find it. All the B&Ms around here seem to be waiting for their old inventory to completely clear the system before getting the new ones.

I had to do some research since I wasn't sure, but it looks like the Amazon deal with a PS3, a remote and Memento for $499 happened about July 10th, so it looks like this latest data would have been the one for it (week ending July 15th). From looking at the stock numbers in the past I figured that it sold around 1000 copies during that promotion. Time flies, but it looks like the PS3 price drop was the week before last.
