I would say there's SEVERAL similarities to Super 8, but the ending of Stranger Things is MUCH more satisfying. Many people have complained about the ending of Super 8.

Super 8 is also a "homage" to the 80's and the type of films that came from the minds of Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg, Stephen King (via various directors & writers - such as Rob Reiner), James Cameron, John Carpenter, etc. just as much as Stranger Things.

However, IMHO, Super 8 narratively falls apart in its third act (J.J. Abrams is just as guilty as other modern filmmakers). It tries for a Spielberg-ian conclusion that does not fit with the rest of the film's darker creature-feature tone and things start to unravel.

Though, S.T. is a hodge-podge of films/books that have come before it, the show is a bit more consistent. Though not perfect, the Duffer Brothers seem to view this story as a kind of love letter to their favorite films growing up rather than solely as a nostalgic cash-in.

OMG, I just got home with my printed BD cover for this and now that it is nicely inside my BD case with the bd disks....I can sigh relief. I have the funky but SO cool VHS packaging, AND a proper sized, BEAUTIFUL bd case for the bd disks.

GLORIOUS!

I liked Super 8 up until the last act, usually I don’t agree with the majority, but this time it’s accurate. It’s cheap right now so maybe I’ll pick it up soon.

I absolutely love this set. Picked it up last night. (There were tons of copies) and my son who had been wanting to watch it, watched the first two episodes in the car. He was scared shitless... lol.

One of the best looking, best sounding TV shows I own on Blu-ray. Watched the first episode the other day projected at 120" diagonal and the picture just leapt off the screen. Sound was equally as impressive. I didn't know what to expect with this release, but I wasn't expecting this at all. I was hoping to not be disappointed naturally, but wasn't expecting Netflix to pull out all the stops like this. Fantastic job. Here's hoping for a Season 2 Blu-ray!

There will be a season 2 Release for sure this was a huge succes. Next seasons will be wide i think because of how popular this has been. Its a goldmine in Blu-Ray and merchandise sales.

Sounds like you have a pretty sick system set up, I’ll be on vacation starting this weekend, mine if I stop by lol, well it looks just as impressive on my miniature 55in TV, glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

For only a 5.1 track, it upconverts to 7.1.4 via DTS Neural: X or Dolby Surround (when you have a Dolby Atmos and DTS: X sound system and overhead speakers) quite well.

However, I would imagine it would be fantastic in true Dolby Atmos with 3D positional audio objects.

Starting with Season 3 of Game of Thrones, the Dolby Atmos re-mixes are very good (Seasons 1&2 had soundtrack archival issues that prevented the Atmos mixes from being as good as can be), so I would say GOT is the best sounding TV show out there on Blu currently.

My Sony sound bar that’s almost 3 years old can do the same & it sounds amazing still, even a 2.0 track give or take having to put it on full blast. Amazing how one bar for under $90 can sound compared to a 5 speaker system.

I'm not a soundbar fan in any stretch of the imagination, so I will take your word for it.

Enjoy!

Are you sitting down? I haven't watched a single episode of GOT. I haven't read about the TV show or seen as much as a promo spot for it. Perhaps I'll have to check it out one of these days! :-P

It's not the best show out there and it can get gratuitous at times like many HBO shows, but I was starving for Dolby Atmos content when I first upgraded my rig. Now, Atmos is becoming more and more prevalent.

Finally had the chance to visit Target and they still had a full shelf of these, 28 to be exact. I’m guessing the people that predicted these will be Black Friday items might be right so far. I didn’t get it and kinda disappointing it doesn’t really look like a real VHS since it’s longer. It’s still a cool unique packaging nonetheless.

The targets around me have 188, 190, 172, 191, and 186 copies. I could see a slight tick up with the new season dropping this weekend, but the stores will have 150+ rolling into November barring a sale. Definitely expecting a Black Friday drop

Thanks to everyone who helped answer my questions. Super 8 looked right up my alley, so I picked it up. I usually don't ever blind buy, but I've seen enough clips and trailers, and it was pretty cheap, so it seemed like a very safe buy

Season 2 only took a day to obtain Certified Fresh status. The hype is real!
