Default Do you want extras on your Blu-ray discs?

Most of us are movie buffs and already own big DVD collections, these DVD collections are slowly being replaced by Blu-ray discs. Before I replace a DVD disc with a Blu-ray disc I like it to have better video/audio and at least equal it in extras. I really hate the fact that I have to keep some DVD's because a BD lacks many or all of the extras that the DVD version had, and I know that many early adapters feel like I do.

This poll is the result of a question to Paidgeek on the insiders thread, were we discussed Sony Pictures lack of extras lately.

For me the video/audio is most important but I like extras and feel that it ads more value and replay to the disc, what do you think?

Cool

I could honestly live without them, but as long as they don't jeopardize overall quality of the film, they're ok

Default Blu-ray extras are a must have

I can't live without extras I love extras they are so fun to watch I don't want to get rid of my dvds just because of that if my dvds had no extras I wouldn't have a need to keep them but instead I have to keep my dvds and get the Blu-Ray edition just so I can have my extras but I hate having to do that because it ruins my whole point for buying Blu-Ray discs in the 1st place so that I can make more room in my collection. So bring on any extra feature to each Blu-Ray it would be very helpful so that I wouldn't have to hesitate to trade in my dvds at Gamestop(thats where I work at).

No hating on the extras allowed especially if they come in high definition

Extras are absolutely pointless fluff.

Just give me that movie, that's all I need.

I actually prefer the extras and if they were shot in HD then put them on the disc in HD. Many people don't realize that most extras for films were shot in SD because, until now, it wasn't economical for the film makers to have cameras that shoot in HD for the behind the scenes stuff. The real important thing on the disc is the Feature Film. The film should be the main focus on any transfer. Even the extras on the disc are focusing on the film. The extras are exactly that, "extras." Im not saying that they really are not important. Extras are great to have, they show how much work it took to make the film and sometimes it tells you more to the story that you missed in the film. The key thing about movies, or any visual narrative, is the storym not the production value. For those of you who liked the film an example here is "28 days later." That film was shot in SD on a canon XL1 if i remember correctly. Yes production value is VERY important and it just looks so damn good when shot in HD or some other high resolution format. But the key thing here is the story. If the extras provide great content and a compelling story about the behind the scenes, then let it be in whatever format it was shot in. But after a while, in my opinion, the extras aren't that great to watch even if they are in HD. They are focusing on the film that you just want to watch. I know with the "Lord of the Rings" films, the extended versions, it took a long time to get through all of the extras because i just wanted to watch the films. Millions went into the feature and only thousands went into the makings. I really dislike what Warner has been using as their excuse for "Batman Begins" and other films. Even though the PIP feature is really cool to have, really, how many times are you going to watch the makings along side the movie. You can get the exact same experience from the stand alone documentaries on the disc. It really bothers me that they downgrade the bitrate just to have a usless extra along side the feature. The only thing i think that should be shown during the feature is the film maker's commentary. It's just as full of information and doesn't take up bandwidh. Most of them are in stereo or mono which is fine. That doens't need to be in surround sound. Example of a previous interactive feature: The matrix, when that film first came out on DVD it had similar features during the film. "Follow the White Rabbit" extra if anyone remembers that. I found that extra to be annoying. I couldn't figure out why you need to watch the whole film to get to those short clips. ok I've already said enough. Good Night

there should be an option for people who "sometimes" check extras....

I sometimes do....it's never a selling point and I rarely buy the version that has the 'additional features'....

The only movie I purchased brand new is the Gladiator Extended Cut...

If there is space and it doesn't affect the quality I don't see why not.

I voted no. Having said that, HD is supposed to be about HD P/Q and SQ as in PCM, DD-THD or DTS-MA first and foremost.
As long as high bit rates are maintained for both a/v....then, and only then should there be any extras for those that want them.

To be honest, I do like extras that are brief and give you extra insight into the movie. For my needs, no more than 10 minutes or so of extras, that is plenty of time to cover the main points of interest. The extras on The Prestige were good in this way, and they were in HD, same for Letters From Iwo Jima though the documentary dragged on a bit for my tastes, and the important info could have been conveyed in much less time. Again, though, at least it was in HD.

I think SD extras from DVDs should always be included if there is nothing better, there's no way I'm keeping both a BD and DVD of the same title, I simply don't have the shelf space.

No extras for me, but if they are included they should be on a separate disc.

I voted that I didn't care even though there are occasions where I really enjoy them. So even though the extras have no impact on my purchase decision, they are a nice bonus!

I am not a fan of extras and rarely watch them.

Just give me the movie in the best possible picture and audio quality, if that is met and there is room for extras - great! Extras should be in HD on an HD disc imo also.

Extras on a separate disc have even less likelyhood of me watching them. If I have to change the disc, I don't even bother....

When I upgrade to a BD I don't want to have to keep my old SD DVD copy around just to have "the extras". I want to sell or give my old DVD away... so I want those extras duplicated on the BD.

Disney's Chicago is a perfect example of how to do it right (and still offers 24-bit PCM audio and high-bit-rate AVC video).

i like to watch the deleted scenes, alternate endings, and the shorts found on animated movies. but i wouldn't miss the interviews, behind the scenes, or "games".
i say fill up the disc with extras, but don't downgrade the movie's quality to make space for it.

i don't buy movies for the extra content... as long as the movie provides the same theatrical experience or a little extra screen time, then that's all i care about... i could care less about picture in picture making off snipets... my movie experience is not "enhanced" by having that... and commentaries??? who listens to them anyway... if they have to sacrifice extras for PQ/AQ, do it... i don't giving a fly fudge
