Nausicaa has a very nice scan. Great colors and filmic. The sound is loud and clear. Noticing higher dB clarity on these releases. Checking out Castle later today.

Maybe I overlooked it, but I'm not clear on whether there is potentially any reason to upgrade the forthcoming titles. According to a post earlier in the thread, it seems like I should be fine with my Disney Porco Rosso, but what about Arrietty, The Cat Returns, and Whisper of the Heart?. I don't care too much about extras, but are there any issues with dubtitles or audio/video quality on these remaining movies?
None of those had dubtitles nor audio/video issues. So no, not worth getting GKids if you already have the Disney releases.

I'm very surprised to see that Nausicaä is a new scan. I assumed that GKIDS would just put out the same ones as Disney. I don't know how to feel because the color is much better, but there are a lot of soft shots now.

^Noticed a couple soft elements early but nothing of a big issue. Also CITS is vibrant in the video dept.

With the drop in price to $12.99, decided to jump on more of these. Only one Best Buy in my area had these on offer, so I put a pick up order in for Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, Kiki's and From Up on Poppy Hill (this was a rebuy, as I was going to return the $17.99 one I bought last week).

I arrive there and they have those horrible pick up stickers plastered on all four of them. I'm like WTH, I'd like ones without stickers please. The guy at the desk is all apologetic, and says they are supposed to attach them underneath on the plastic, and goes off to get me new ones.

He locates three, but Kiki is sold out. I say okay, if you can take the sticker off without doing substantial damage I'll take it. Off comes the sticker, off comes the paint.

I just buy the three others. Guess I'll be ordering Kiki online. I don't mind a few dented corners, but paint being removed is a big no no.

What do you mean by "higher dB clarity"? I'm kind of a layman when it comes to video and especially audio specifications.

Would you say the video for Castle in the Sky is different from the Disney BD in any significant way, assuming you own it?

I'm guessing it means "better signal to noise ratio" (in other words less "hiss" or other background noise).

Sorry guys but I can't figure out what is the problem with English script for Kiki.
Both Japanese Blu-rays has one set of English subtitles while Disney's release has two different translations (marked as English ESL and English SDH). There is a line at 00:23:12 when Osono speaks:

Japanese Blu-rays:
Quote:
Sit down and relax. I'll make us some coffee.
Disney Blu-ray (ESL):
Quote:
Sit down and relax. Would you like some coffee?
Disney Blu-ray (SDH):
Quote:
Sit down and relax. Would you like some hot chocolate?
Does GKids used any of these translations or they provided something new?
What is a Streamline dubtitles, are they among of these examples?
Thanks in advance.

In a word? Pickiness. Really, it's a small problem.

The story with this one is that the blu-rays available in the US market have translations that aren't "perfect" enough for some viewers. The translations are actually not straight translations from Japanese like the other movies, but are really the scripts of the previous English tracks. The Disney SDH subtitles are a word for word copy of their track (the one with Kirsten Dunst), while the Disney English subtitles are actually a script from the old English track made by Streamline back in the 90s.

The GKids one has the Streamline subtitles according to people in the thread.

(If you want to really confuse yourself, there's the old Disney DVD which has Jiji with extra lines. Personally I like that one, but I might get tomatoes thrown at me if I say any more...)

From what I understand, instead of literally translated subtitles (like they apparently used for PM & CITS), the GKIDS Blu-ray for Kiki uses dubtitles from the dub by the now-defunct "Streamline Pictures". Apparently, these dubtitles are "more" accurate, but they are still not proper subtitles.

The subtitles on the standalone Disney disc are not the Streamline subtitles. The subtitles on the standalone Disney disc are based on the Disney dub script. Disney went back to the Streamline subtitles for their Miyazaki boxset.

Sound level or volume. dB is decibel level. The Japanese 2.0 tracks are so crisp and clear out of my Yamaha receiver at Wide Dynamic Range.

Yep I have the Disney version. New video is simply great. No horrible wobble some were panicking about. Some is intentional like the steam pipes shaking. The literal subs are 99% and much better than the old dubtitles. "SHEEETAAA!"

Oh! so that's what "dB" means, but is the new GKIDS BD video noticeably different from the Disney BD? Because from what I've heard it isn't.

This is my favorite dub because it's what I grew up listening to on the VHS. I actually still need to buy the 2003 DVD just for that (plus the 2010 Disney BD has a weird audio glitch where it sounds like every line is being read through a fan and it's annoying as hell; anyone know if that's an audio issue with this GKIDS release?).

Yes, I've heard from several places that the GKIDS Blu-ray has the same audio issue as the Disney Blu-ray. https://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/7245...ctors-edition/

after picking up a poppy without a slip, and not wanting to pay some pretty ridiculous prices for slips from users here on the website (as much as I appreciate the offers in the first place), i tried another store in NYC and struck gold.

so for anyone interested for a poppy with a slip, go to the lexington / 86th st best buy. 2 or 3 copies still there.

Well that kinda sucks, and why still no inclusion of the Spanish dub? Only the original Disney DVD had it which was very nice.

So is there any reason at all to get the GKids version of Kiki if I already have the Disney release?
