So as technically you're in HMV a lot given your work with young people, you could actually take photos of your local store couldn't you?

I could but It would be inappropriate to use a work phone and also to let my client wander off, don’t you think? . The store is normally quite full.

Guys seriously, all you need to do is Google HMV stores. The big stores are loaded with physchical media. It’s what they do!

Everyone does it. I bet you have done it if you trawl through some past posts.

I'm assuming you have your own phone to use as well no?

And why would your client be wandering off if you're going in there to look at the sections they and yourself are interested in? In this case the Blu-ray/UHD section...

I know what HMV stores looks like and the only times HMV are ever "quite full" are during December leading up to the Christmas period. Apart from that they are generally quiet with more than enough room to walk around during the day.

Fair enough if you were to just come out and say you don't want to take photos which is fair enough, but don't make claims as to why you can't when it's possible to do so.

Your reply makes me laugh. First of all, why would I be carrying a iPhone about at work when I have a work phone? The phone is for emergencies and that’s it.
Why would my client be wandering off? That’s a very ignorant statement right there. You obviously have no experience with people with special needs.

Finally, October-Dec is the busiest time of year for stores like HMV. I know this might sound amazing in your strange world but people like to start gift shopping from September.

However, according to you it’s entirely responsible to be snapping pictures on my phone while working with a vulnerable young person who has multiple special needs? Ok mate, ok.

Are you seriously asking me to prove that HMV sells Blu-ray and DVD and indeed has rows and rows of said items? I bought some fudge from Thornton’s the other day? Do you want proof that it wasn’t cat food?

I am a huge gamer. I buy most of my games digitally because of one simple reason, the quality is IDENTICAL to disc. I have games on Steam, Nintendo Switch and PS4. Films are different for obvious reasons. Plus I don’t have the same attachment to games. Once I complete a game I’m done unless it’s a VR game that is so immersive I simply have to play it again. Totally different situation.

It’s delicious. Chocolate covered! Getting a few packs in for a Blu-ray marathon over Christmas! That and a family size Galaxy bar or two.

You said physical discs for games were making a comeback sales wise. and I said not in the USA and then you provided a UK link.

Now I realize we are on different shores but you always come with your UK experiences as if that reflects everywhere.

I provided a link because everything is questioned. However your last sentence beggars belief.
It is ironic because that’s exactly what you guys do. Seriously, there are some major major countries like Germany, Australia, UK etc.. where disc is still hugely relevant. Heck, it is in the US.

You’re the one who brought your work into this, not me.

But hey, you do whatever you need to do to fight the good fight for physical copies.

How else could I answer a question like that? You are questioning my post?

I am doing my bit. I buy discs and have just started with 4K. Now I need to forget this thread and start enjoying them. Digital has a big future but it’s still subscription based. Collecting digital copies just doesn’t have the value and some of you will learn that the hard way. The genie is out of the bottle with all you can eat subscription. Serious collectors will stick with disc just like they have stuck with CD and vinyl. CD could outlast MP3 downloads via ITunes and NOBODY saw that coming, regardless of what they may say.

In all fairness, Steedeel -and keep in mind that, like you, I'm on the physical media side of this debate- you are kind of grasping as straws here with excuses to not take photos at the store.

I get that you don't want to use your work phone to take pictures and that you generally don't feel the need to also carry your personal phone around when you are working since you have the work phone with you. But you can't make a one-time exception and carry your personal phone with you the next time you know that you're going to this store?

And I also get that you don't want to lose focus focus on the young person who you are with. But is it really that hard to keep an eye on him while prepping your phone to take a pic, checking to make sure you know exactly where he is once you are set, then taking a split second to snap a pic of the media section, and then immediately turn your attention back to the kid? And maybe do that a couple/few times if needed to get pics of the media section? I get that you want to be responsible, but come on. Arguably if you are even taking the time to look at movies for yourself, then you are, at least slightly, dividing your attention anyway. Is taking a pic really all that different?

And how far out of your way is this store? Do you absolutely never go there on your own when it's not for work purposes? You are making it sound like the simple act of taking your phone with you and snapping a few pics is some kind of endurance trial.

Digital for me! I admit blu-ray is superior but I don't have a huge home cinema setup to really notice the difference. I also never used to watch special features so I don't mind the majority of digital movies not having them.

I think the whole idea of ourselves who become physical media collectors is that it feels like there are a lot of passion & commitment being involved in the topic. People who are enthusiasts in this area from all walks of life who do talk about it, among other things in life, like it is their bread & butter. And I don't see anything wrong with that in that sense because it is something that affects them on a personal level. I think this type stuff is sort of equal to a scenario of 'younger people being reminiscent with family members showing their first walk in front of their parents hooked to a TV & VCR' type of way.

People can create a lot of discussion on this topic from so many different methods to make a credibl point to other people.

There were a couple of videos that I watched on Youtube that sort of reflect the quality of the topic in front of you.

I just find the whole area of home video, among my other interests, to be absolutely fascinating to a degree. Sometimes a topic close to me gets my attention on here & on other news articles & sites that discuss physical media among a wider populace.

Ok, let’s clear this up before I jump out. First of all, HMV is a huge name in the U.K. it’s of absolutely no debate what this store sells. It sells Blu-ray, DVD, CD, games etc..

Secondly, the films and tv shows my client looks at are of zero interest to me outside a strictly work related interest. We are different ages after all.

I do not visit the store in my own time because I buy all my discs online (I have stated this several times throughout this thread)

I don’t carry my phone as it is expensive and I am in and out of my bag all day long to access work stuff so it’s just not practical or sensible to be carrying a phone when I have all my emergency contacts on my work phone.

Finally, I get paid to look after someone’s son, that’s what I do. It’s a huge responsibility and I take it very seriously.

Sure, if in my city centre over the next few weeks I may pop in and take a few photos (and get odd looks). Am I going to worry about doing so? Absolutely ****** not. What do I care if a bunch of strangers on a forum don’t believe me?

You don't have to do anything. Frankly I don't personally care one way or the other. But if your main reason for not doing so is summed up in those last couple of sentences, then that's really all that needed to be said. All of the other silly, lame excuses were not really needed.

If you simply don't want to bother, fine. But don't act like it's this huge undertaking and that you can't risk taking your personal mobile, portable phone with you (which the whole point of why they even exist is for people to take them along wherever they go) for fear that it might get damaged, and that during the split second of you taking a photo, the kid will have time to make it to another country and you will have no clue where he is.

Also, you can't take pics for personal reasons on your work phone (and then just transfer it to your computer and delete it from the phone), but keeping presumably personal-based emergency contacts is okay? I get that emergency contacts are comparatively far more important than taking photos of some movie discs, but in either scenario you are at least in part using your work phone for personal reasons.
