Not only you'll be jeopardizing the warranty, you will be substantially degrading the overall quality of the unit by modifying the internal circuitry with a subpar generic part that wasn't originally manufactured, certified nor installed by Oppo. Once that modification has been made, that blu-ray player is no longer an original Oppo product.

I think the firmware mod would be more risky than a plug in mod that you activate with the remote control when you want to play a Region B blu-ray. The plug in mod I have seen would to me be more safe. I have not tried it yet but I would like to one day. That is the risk you take with the region mod, I would rather to plugin a mod than to firmware it. I guess the board that plugs in has it's own chip of some kind, much safer. The point is regardless of warranty or what Oppo deems official it's what makes the person happy using the disc player.

This player isn't supposed to be region free, but it plays all my Criterions. Did I miss something?

Yeah, you lose all the secondary audio (menu sounds etc). Picture in picture commentaries could be affected as well but you'll generally lose nothing of importance.

Criterions are most likely all region A. If you bought the player in/from North America, all Criterions will work.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on this thread but since there are so many positive reviews for the Sony X800, should I get extra coverage? (ie. Geek Squad) I don't know much about players. I'm definitely getting coverage for a 4K TV.

Are we supposed to select this every time a movie is watched 4k, blu ray, and dvd?

Also in the set up menu for screen settings is there any settung that i need turned on that are a must. Pretty much all my settings are on auto.

Thank you for the help!

You don't know what problems you could encounter after the Manufacture's Warranty runs out so it is best to be safe than sorry. I ordered my Sony player through Amazon.com & got a 4 year warranty for a little over $10.00 or $11.00 but after reading the fine print it is really only a 3 year Warranty since the first year runs concurrently with the Manufacture's Warranty which shouldn't be right since it screws you out of a year of warranty.

I went with some recommended settings from a link provided here.

HDR: Auto, Output Resolution: Custom, Custom Resolution: UHD Auto, Color Space: 4:2:2, Color Depth: Auto, 3D Output: Auto, DVD 24p Conversion: On, in a dual HDMI configuration.

Is it possible I'm setting something else wrong? I wouldn't expect player settings to introduce glitching, like lockups, and disc errors to a player. Weren't a lot of the early 203 players plagued with issues? Is it possible I have one, that can't be corrected with a firmware update? My confidence isn't high since it's a refurb model, and they're tested out before being sold.

You have it setup right. Its actually the 4K Disc itself, but in the regular blu-ray and it will look normal.

That's why I've been seriously considering Geek Squad. For TVs, people have said GS covers a much higher cost for repairs and can replace the TV. Square Trade doesn't cover much.

Yes 100% normal. The 'mix' setting is for just that purpose, mixing other audio with the main soundtrack, e.g. those bloody annoying menu sounds or BD-Live picture-in-picture tracks, which blend the main movie audio with the PiP audio stream on the fly. So it's pretty much pointless to have this feature left on all the time as you'll just neuter the audio and you won't be able to bitstream Atmos/DTS:X to a suitable AVR. Turning it off is literally the first thing I do when setting up any Blu-ray player, it's called Secondary Audio on Panasonics.

does geek squad replace the unit if defective under their warranty? or make you wait while they send it out for repair to manufacturer? i know what they do with tv claims under geek squad. not sure about blu players.

I think I figured out what happened with my color after a long, long session of switching back and forth with different settings. Changing to 4:4:4 and deep color DOES improve the color, definitely switches it to a wider gamut. I tested certain scenes over and over like the opening of Into Darkness and scenes with the pink lady in Order of the Phoenix. I actually think this might be true in SDR mode as well, though I did less testing there.

However, the reason I was thrown off after a few days is because while switching to 4:4:4 and deep color enhances the colors, it does not enhance color luminance, which I think is my entire problem. I assume this is all about limited HDR not putting enough light behind colors depending on the scene, which is what I originally assumed and smart people suggested. I kept trying to convince myself this wasn't the core issue but I think it is. Bumping color up a few notches seems to fix it, but then in another scene with more natural luminance it makes the color look boosted, so I don't think it will ever look "right" to me.

I'm going to focus on playing with SDR conversion the next few days. Other than black crush it looks amazing, and maybe there's some secret fix for that. I know some boost contrast and such to make the luminance look better, but I just hate the gamma change that results.

Samsung KU6300, it maxes out at 500 nits. HDR10 is designed around 1,000 nits. I believe I googled your TV before and it had full HDR, so if you're seeing the same washed out color as me then who the f' knows.

I plan to play with SDR on the Sony more in the next few days. It does look great, but I also thought it had a good bit of black crush. If you could post your settings that would be cool, would give me an idea where you're coming from with it.
Hey there. Im new to this post. Just picked up the ubp-x800 last week. Loving it so far but it seems like you know what the video settings should be. Could you let me know what setting you recommend? I have a Vizio M-60 d1 that supports both hdr and dolby. I dont know if that matters or not.

Thank you again

Always a good idea considering it's cheap enough at Best Buy for a low price-point like this. if anything happens, they will work with you. If it can't be fixed, you'll end up with a gift card with the value of the player on it. It's expensive for a TV but for a $150 player it's only like $25. Well worth the peace of mind. It's still an electronic device.

Yeah, but the markup is fine when the player was $300 and the modded player is $450. Now that the player is $150 a $300 markup for the mod is a bit preposterous imo.
