Wow, what a mind job. All I can think is that Netflix wanted to maximize profits from the Blu-ray version, hence having not a hint of information anywhere about this forthcoming UHD version.

Now it makes sense why the Blu-ray version is being marked down so much on Black Friday despite just coming out... it's essentially worthless at this point.

The HDR version will be released in January with Betamax packaging, followed by a White Betamax package in February with Dolby Vision.

Yeah, rpvee is totally a Target executive hoping to rake in the big bucks for the most popular home video format (more people totally own 4K players than standard HD Netflix streaming devices) ever of a show that streams as part of a service that most people have access to. What a publicity stunt. Genius way to rake in the $$$$

As somebody who worked at Target as a kid a decade ago i can assure you that an unobservant Target employee put out something he wasn’t supposed to.

Of course, the release was kept quiet so people would double dip. But if you have access to 4K viewing and bought a standard blu ray release with no special special features, only yourself is to blame!

I hope you’re not implying I’m a plant from Target lol. Unless you mean having them out at an NYC store was the stunt, not my posting, which is an interesting theory. It’s a brand new, big location in the middle of Manhattan.

You guys that bought the BDs just got Rickrolled by Target and/or Netflix. They're not legally obligated to inform people when an improved product will be released, but this just seems plain dirty to me. There's absolutely no possible way that Target and Netflix didn't know that they were going to be releasing the 4K version just a few weeks after the BDs. I think you guys should try to exchange your blu-rays and make a big stink about it, if they aren't compliant.

I didn't say anyone was "a Target executive". I could fully believe they were authorized to put copies on shelves and wait for the news to filter to consumers--which it did immediately.

Plus, having seen the show, and knowing how it was and is being promoted, these kinds of "strange[er] things" fit with the vibe they are trying to give to the series.

Do you honestly believe that if Target had actually cared that the last release was leaked (and built up major anticipation, for little to no cost to Target), they would have allowed another edition to leak again? Do you really think Netflix would have been happy, if that were the case? Absolutely not. At best, it's highly suspicious, and you would think that people at Netflix/Target would be furious if these leaks were occurring purely by accident.

Also, it's worth noting that I really don't ever remember other Target exclusives being leaked weeks in advance of their supposed street dates. Maybe some people ordered online and received copies a few days in advance, but it would be rare for Target to screw up timing of exclusives this badly, with the same company involved, more than once in less than two months.

As it is, my guess is neither company gives a damn, because each time they have "mysteriously" been able to exploit the internet to build anticipation for these releases, which otherwise would have had little fanfare by release week. Sure, the timing of the formats was off, big time, but other than that, this was a perfect little plan, and it was probably accomplished by simply not bothering to tell someone at Target to not do something.

If I were to go back and get a second copy, is there anyone here with a proper 4K setup who’d be interested in buying it from me at cost plus shipping (express or not, up to said person) so they could test it and give us a quality report before release/before everyone buys it?

The decision rests in whichever studio owns the rights to Narcos or any other Netflix distributed title.

Stranger Things just so happens to be a Netflix Studios release, not Sony or Disney or Warners, etc.
