Sony UBP-X800 4K UHD Blu-ray player

Sony next year in 2018 might still make 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players with native Blu-ray 3D support. The reason for this is that Sony's high-end SXRD projectors still support 3-D.

Lol at anyone who calls 3D just a gimmick but then buys a UHD player specifically for HDR and has their house equipped with atmos sound.

All are simply ways of enhancing the entertainment value of films.

BTW, 3D photography is over a century old.

TV manufacturers let go of the 3D feature, one of the reasons, to stay competitive in that brightness game of 4K. By adding 3D they were losing some of that brightness, even when watching 4K content. ...From my readings, if it isn't fake news...that and/or to save money.

I think 3D was dropped because of the bottom line MONEY!! Like another poster I also think people who know best see it as a distraction from what they want the herd to buy.

3D is a niche market that for the sole reason of needing the glasses makes it much less attractive to the general public. I have very humble 3D movie selection but I think it is a big mistake to shut down the production of equipment. I had an excellent 3D projector that sadly had to go and was replaced by one that is not 3D However regardless of what manufacturers want me to do I will eventually buy another, 2nd hand if I have to.

I am sure 4k is here to stay and there is no turning back even if some people might not adopt it for years, I also think that when you least expect it they will try to push 8K on us. I might change my mind but probably 4k is good enough for me and I won't be as keen to keep feeding this monstrous industry that wants to keep sucking us dry.

I got a new Samsung 49" 4K HDR set over 6 months ago to replace my "old" non-HDR 4K set which was (still is, I gave it to my parents) 3D capable. I have a few 3D titles like Prometheus, Tron Legacy, Star Wars TFA and The Martian, all of them excellent 3D movies. My new Samsung set can't display 3D but to be honest I don't miss 3D at all, wearing glasses for around 2 hours is not my cup of tea. I rebought Prometheus and The Martian on UHD BD and I much prefer 4K picture with HDR than 3D.
The only movie I miss watching on 3D is Dr. Strange, it has a "fun" 3D for my taste. I whish it's released on UHD BD soon.

My player finally arrived (only 3 days late). Now I am having problems getting it connected and updated. It arrived with a version ending in 5, but will not update to the newer version ending in 8. I have it connected to the internet using wired connection. I tried doing the wireless connection, and that was a no go also. It's only about 4 feet from my router/modem. I have other TV's, Roku players, and another Blu-ray player all connected either wired or wireless, so I know that is working.

Guys, is it me or does this player not have a screensaver? Cant find it on the manual instructions or on the player. I hate that its turning off automatically after certain minutes of getting paused. Please help.

Did you look on your onscreen settings? Screen Saver should be in the video setting but if not, then it doesn't have one, but it should.

Unfortunately it does not have a screensaver but you can disable automatic shutdown somewhere in the settings menu, think it's called "automatic standby".

Thanks guys. I constantly like to pause and could go paused for about half an hour and already had the player turn off automatically twice. Im shocked this doesnt have a screensaver.

Easy but first I'll give you a warning: Most players inc CD players while placed in pause keep the disc spinning. The motor used for this in the vast majority of players is a cheaply made motor with a limited number of lifetime hours. As the motor wears it may have speed inconsistencies that can cause the picture to freeze, stop working completely, etc. So I wouldn't recommend leaving it running all the time, I haven't opened this player but is likely to work as described.

Now what you wanted to hear.

When you are on the player's screen (top right hand corner) "set up", then "system settings" then "auto standby"

In that case the only recommendation I can give you is to call Sony and see what they say.

I am almost sure I had it with the version ending in 175 now I have M36.R.0178 and the option is accessible following the order I stated on my previous post.

Wouldnt that be something already manufactured into the player from factory? Dont know how a firmware would affect that.

It could be either way, the best example I can give you is a computer. All the options and buttons you click on a computer are created by the software the electronics are only channeling whatever its been programed in the software and can be changed entirely when you upload a different operating system. Since I don't have all the technical details of this player I can't answer your question but there is a good chance software might play a part. That was the reason for me asking you what soft version you have.

Ok, so my current firmware update is M36.R.0178 and these are the options on my player:



You scroll up and its OSD language, closed caption settings, HDMI settings. Im amazed at the fact I dont have that “Auto Standby” thingy.

What else to do? Exchange the player?
