A second viewing cemented this as a new personal favorite--I still found it mesmerizing and it managed to make me think a lot about issues like faith and suffering. Looking at the film as a whole, I came to realize it's more like the cinematic equivalent of a bust or portrait.
I think a second viewing is in order for me somewhere down the line.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I saw the 82 minute restored version via TCM (the same one that will air in the next few days on the channel). I wonder if the full version adds much more to the experience.

Like I said, I'll probably give it another chance.

As of now Sunrise remains my favorite. I don't think it can be topped.

Sunrise is my second favorite. I'm looking forward to seeing more from Murnau.

I love Murnau, but I don't love Sunrise. How does that work?

The only way that works is if you haven't seen Sunrise.

Is the 110 minute version not just the same film shown at 16fps? I've seen it mentioned a few times, but have never heard any substantive differences described or found where the 110 minute number came from. The Eureka disc has two versions, one at 20 fps and one at 24 fps, that are 82 and 96 minutes, so without doing any math it seems about right that further slowing down to 16 fps would be ~110.

I'm assuming Criterion will be releasing the 24fps version, though from what I've read it seems pretty well agreed upon that 20fps would be erring on the side of likelihood (and admitting that blu-ray will be 20+dupes anyway).

Pardon my ignorance, but I think you're right.

I noticed IMDB listed the film at 1 hour, 54 minutes.

I know. I could probably get Night Train to Munich for $17 after discounts right now. It's just the principle of the thing, dammit!

Can't go wrong between Passion, Sunrise and Pandora's Box, another Criterion badly in need of upgrade. I'm surprised there aren't more folks clamoring for that one.

Just a year or so ago, I finally bit the bullet to buy digibooks for both of these.

So you're welcome.

I would love an upgrade of Pandora's Box. I have to say though, I think that as far as Murnau is concerned, City Girl is, by far, my favorite.

Just had to put my vote in...

It's funny that you mentioned City Girl as I just bought it today from Eureka's November Sale...........I recommend region-freedom to all!

In the past I've wondered why the heck, Pandora's Box has not seen a Blu release. The OOP DVD is so expensive and this is one of the top silents I have wanted to watch. Odd it hasn't had a Blu release anywhere.

No pardon needed. I think there's been a fair bit of confusion about running times and cuts for Passion... I had to do some Googling to make sure I hadn't missed something about another cut!

Even odder considering that it was restored 4/5 years ago.

City Girl is actually region free so you're gonna need better arguments than that

I guess i prefer Murnau when he is 'darker', so to speak. e.g Nosferatu, The Last Laugh, Faust etc.

I honestly think that Sunrise is one of the most overrated classic films. hah. But yeah, minority and all that.

I've finally gotten to my initial viewing of Le Samourai in HD and I am frustrated and in awe, the film left me thinking and rethinking its contents in a way I haven't for any of the other Melville films. While it's not quite the genre perfection of Le Doulos it is richer and more nuanced which is an interesting feat considering how Le Samourai strips away so much ornamentation. The film sings but it is a desiccated skeleton of genre, all the flesh eaten away, the petrified bones resonating in a thunderous and pure symphonic thrum.

Is the avatar a symbol of the newfound erudite Ray Jackson? This post could comfortably be placed into the pages of The New Yorker.
