That's really lazy. How did no one spot that? Or maybe they didn't care? Or maybe everyone involved at the design stage was an idiot? Was going to wait for this to hit the sales but that's really put me off buying it.

Yeah, typical laziness by the U.K side of the company ; the French disc came in a minimalistic, but rather elegant magenta-ish digipak. They are being released by Pathe on both sides of the pond, so there's no excuse for that.

Yeah, that's super lazy. I'll go with "no-one cares".
Of course the original 2 disc Blu-ray+DVD US release with that artwork was a thing of cheeky beauty because when you opened it, the discs were boobies!
Whoever designed the US set totally "got it".

Shocking laziness on that cover art.

We're now on the 22nd anniversary.

I hope we get a real special edition (with participation from Berkley, Gershon, Verhoeven, etc.) for the 25th anniversary in 2020.

In regards to the cover, when MGM/20th Century Fox re-released the film on Blu-ray in the U.S. in 2015, at least they updated the artwork.

What’s the big deal about the artwork, is there something particularly bad about it?

No, not at all. It's a very nice shot of Berkley, but it just reeks of laziness. Especially with the "XV" in the background, considering it's the 22nd anniversary now.

Oh god, I didn’t realise it was a XV for the 15th Anniversary! Yeah, that’s pretty bad.

I'm trying to remember ... I'm sure there was another title that had anniversary artwork or menus, released nowhere near the year in question.

If they keep the XV, then surely 2017 will go down as cover arts' Most Lazy Year Ever. Considering distributors are now using the same artwork for 2D, 3D and UHD releases.

No cover, for me, will beat ITV originally putting a foreboding picture of Kyrano, the servant (!), on the cover of Thunderbirds, instead of the actual villain, The Hood.

That's why they zoomed the image so the "X" in "XV" is not as obvious:

vs

I don't know why Pathé couldn't just have used the iconic original art. They had no problem using it for the UK DVD:

By the way, there is still no new submission for the film on the BBFC site, so it will be very interesting to see if this is indeed uncut or not. And the use of the Fox/MGM edition art, along with the lack of any mention of the film being remastered also suggests this may not be the 4K master used in France.

As it’s by Pathé, I’d be amazed if it’s not the new 4K master Pathé released in France.

So would I, but then the cover art proves that Pathé UK also have access to the Fox/MGM materials, so it's a question of what they've used. Hopefully, it's the new master, but then you wonder why they've not touted it on the cover.

Now, *that's* a cover! (Just get rid of the 15th anniversary banner at the top.)
