Purchasing 4k when HD/SD is already owned?

Somebody told me this on the Apple TV subreddit

If you have an iPhone/iPad it is as easy as clicking on the square with an upward pointing arrow that is found in the upper right corner of the page for any movie. when you click on that you will see a series of options. The second option on the bottom row of choices is "gift". Click on that and enter your email address that use you for iTunes. It will then show you the price and ask if you want to proceed. You then pick a gift card theme and then finalize your purchase.
You can then check your email on your device, click the link, and redeem right there on your phone or tablet. The movie is now added to your library as 4K. I am sorry I don't really use iTunes on my PC but I would assume the process is similar.

I can confirm that the gifting trick works.

I bought Bat v Supes Extended by gifting because I had the non 4k version in my library.

The only problem with this method is that you can't pay with your iTunes balance, you have to give them a credit card.

Does anyone know how to do it on Google Play or FandangoNow?

And why doesn't anyone else (again, besides Vudu) have a specific 4k page.

Not sure about GooglePlay, but with FandangoNow, I never could figure out how to upgrade. Pretty sure you can’t. When Sharknado was free one day earlier this year, I didn’t know 4K was also free, so I bought it in HD. Tried signing out, clicking 4K and signing in, but no matter what, it just saw that I already owned it.

The easiest way is to have Google delete the movie so you can rebuy it. You can also do this for FandangoNow but it could mess up your UV library.

Now I I did make a second FandangoNow account and a second UV account then merged the second UV with my original UV account in MyUV. Then using the second FandangoNow account, I upgraded my Independence Day SD freebie from Target to the HD freebie.

Only if it's purchased directly on iTunes. If it's an import from MA, it doesn't automatically upgrade.

I would add, if you buy the UHD version in Google or Vudu, it will port to 4K in iTunes.

I need to find a way to upgrade Google Play.
How do I tell them to delete a movie (i.e. Blade Runner) when I didn’t buy it there to begin with?
Will MA just synch it again?

Here's how I was able to buy an upgrade to something I already owned on Fandangonow. this only works if your original copy was not purchased on Fandangonow. it works if it was imported from your UV library only.

1. Go to settings in FN and unlink your UV library.
2. Wait for your UV movies to disappear.
3. Go to the movie you want to buy and purchase. It will ask you to link your UV library but will still allow you to complete the purchase. Your UV library will now be linked again and you own the upgraded version of the movie.

I right now own the Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2 in my iTunes account in HD (ported through MA from my Vudu account which I own them there in HDX). I was wondering if I redeem a 4k code of the Amazing Spiderman 1 and 2 through MA, will I get them upgraded to 4k in my iTunes account automatically.

This week I bought the 4K legacy collection.
I went to the Sony redeem link, it sent me to Movies Anywhere where I put in the code.
The result was, Vudu was still HDX, but all my iTunes versions actually play in 4K now.

The fact that this thread exists is pretty appalling. I give Vudu credit for making it simple and easy.

I honestly don’t even think you needed to redeem the 4K if you had MA linked and if it was just HD in your account. I had the HD of the whole collection in my UV account and it ported to iTunes in HD but then eventually upgraded and played in 4K.

Strange. I check my library everyday and not a single one switched to 4K.

In my experiences, yes, any code redeemed in iTunes overwrites the previous code, giving you, if available, 4k.
