Sure, sure. I don't think either of us who raised an eyebrow did much more than ... well, raise an eyebrow.

As for our concern being too much overthinking even for the Internet, I mean ... we're already pretty far down the Rabbit Hole by even having this thread if you think about it. I think a (admittedly paranoid) comment or two about the A.R.% is probably in bounds.

Anyway, I'm extra geeky-protective of this release. I dunno anybody who liked the thing more than I did. I saw it 8 times at the theater. So, yeah, I really really really want the Blu-ray to be dreamy.

Now cut that out! When I read your post a mental picture of David Carradine immediately came to my mind.

The 5.1 is clearly a very deliberate choice and one that they're even promoting as a feature. Has anyone else noticed the top of the back cover?

"4K HDR version with original theatrical audio mix"

The fact that the lack of Atmos gets almost a promotional banner made me giggle slightly when I saw the case in HMV earlier today (I'd not seen that the back cover was posted on here).

Again, I don't mind that he is 5.1 or bust, but at least for godsake create a QUALITY 5.1 mix and not the shoddy stuff he tends to put out!

Just you wait until Christmas Day, Geoff. I'm taking a sabbatical around then, as all the 'WHY DOES THIS DISC LOOK DULL ON MY 2015 4K TV?' posts will probably drive me to murder.

So, besides the sound and picture - what did you all think of this movie? Doesn't seem to be a lot of enthusiasm for it.

I will be getting it and watching it as part of the Nolan Collection - but I was wondering what my fellow movie watching aficionados thought of it. (And since this is the 4K thread - what are your expectations for PQ?)

Thanks in advance.

For me, it was a tease. It was one of those movies that managed to convince me for a moment that it just might manage to elevate itself above its writer/director's weaknesses and become something transcendent... but then it came crashing down right back into the worst of Nolan's crutches and bad habits. In the end, for me, a solid movie that hinted at greatness only to disappoint.

My effusive box quote would be, "10 times better than Interstellar!" Those who know my taste would understand how little that says.

I think it's amazing, but anyone going in expecting a conventional narrative setup will get a surprise. You're thrown into the midst of it and left to fend for yourself, it's almost like a ride rather than a movie. It won't be as incredible in the home as seeing it in IMAX but then what is?

As for 4K, I'm expecting it to look verr naice. I think some people won't rate it super highly precisely because it's not some colour-drenched HDR overload but for sheer detail you can't get better than 15-perf IMAX.

Dunkirk should look tremendous in 4k UHD blu ray.

The resolution, dynamic range, and color able to be captured on the IMAX film is top and breathtaking.

I had heard that (not a conventional narrative) from a few buddy's who view mainstream movies, and they were put off by it, which is why I wanted opinions from this crowd.

On the PQ side, I find most of Nolan's movies to be fairly dull affairs color-wise, although still very enjoyable. It will be interesting to see how HDR affects his films. (I'm most curious to see how Batman Begins fairs).

Looking forward to seeing this movie and feel prepared going in with expectations of the narrative being something unique (which I know Nolan was going for).

Thanks for your 2 cents.

The trailers looked fairly drab (lots of grey skies, etc), so it should be interesting to see how HDR affects this film. Looking forward to seeing it for the first time.

I thought that the film was as good dramatically as it was technically, which is to say, very good indeed. 10 Stars out of 10! It is in the conversation for being the best film I have seen in 2017. Despite my disappointment with its audio codec lacking Atmos (What else is new with Christopher Nolan films?), I am really looking forward to getting the UHD HDR disk.

It will very likely be the best looking UHD release to date.

The film varies from gloomy and grey to bright and sunny. I think it's quite rich in color (obviously other more colorful films exist) so this should look really nice. I mean look at this shot!

Dunkirk is my favorite film of 2017 and it says a lot, because this year had quite a number of good to great films. I love both technical and dramatic qualities, even though some decisions didn't quite work as intended, IMO.
