Think of it like this. When your out in the world you don't just hear sounds in front of you. You hear sounds in front, the sides, and in back of you. You don't hear nature you are experincing it. Same thing wiht Blu-ray. As was mentioned earlier wiht blu-ray and its new codecs, you hear it as if you are actually there. Thats the intened idea that make blu-ray,... blu-ray. You won't be disappointed. If you are your def. (no offence to def people )

Uncompressed audio is better, but via optical you won't be getting it. Most/all blu-rays let you pick which kind of audio you get, but the uncompressed audio will be compressed a bit before it is sent to your receiver. It should be (probably is) okay to let them run as is. You will probably have to set your blu-ray player up to tell it to output via your optical connection (something like setting it up to bitstream DD and DTS).

Yes, it makes a huge difference! It's like you're only getting half the movie without surround sound, and once you get it, you'll thank yourself that you did.

Of course surround sound makes a difference. Sound and picture are 50/50 in my book.

I was thinking of upgrading my sound system to this
https://www.sonystyle.co.uk/SonyStyl...02BC29B72)/.do
I use a PS3 for my blu-ray playback. with this system, will I get the HD audio.
My budget is about £650 if you can think of something better.

Your link doesn't seem to take me to the item in question, but if the receiver has the logos for Dolby TruHD and/or DTS HD Master Audio on it, then it should support HD audio. A wb page might be different, but it should say that it supports the codecs. Otherwise, it doesn't.

The difference between using your tv speakers and surround sound is FAR greater than the difference between watching SDTV and HDTV. I would liken it more to going from black and white TV to color TV.

I enjoyed the novel effects of a surround channels for a few years, but discovered I preferred the "cleaner" sound of stereo with two subs. I eventually gave the surround speakers away.

Ok so with the system I have I can get HD sound on it right or is it to old I have had it for a few years now? Also does it matter what kind of optical cable I buy or are they all good?

No. You won't get HD audio out of that set up but you can get Dolby Digtial and presumably DTS as well. To get the HD audio..... you would need a receiver than can get LPCM via HDMI or multi-channel analog inputs.

YES!

Surround almost makes more difference than the video (in my opinion).
Very important -- and blu-ray sound is wayyyy better than DVD.

The best option is called lossless. That would mean using your PS3 to output to a receiver that has an HDMI input and can accept (at minimum) PCM (even better is one that takes PCM/Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HDMA).

But even an older receiver will sound better since most Blu-ray's are either 640 kbps or 1.5 mbps (DTS core track). Most DVD's are like 440 kbps - much more compressed.

The long and short of it is YES - Blu-ray sound is awesome!

When you get a receiver that has HDMI inputs, you can run one HDMI cable from the PS3 to the receiver and that will carry both the audio and video signal. You will need to go to the PS3's audio settings and select HDMI for audio output.
