Hoping some studio out there decides to drop a big surprise today which would just make this the best Halloween Ever. I have to keep the hope alive!

Yes, it does. Anaglyph only, with the credits in 2D. Pathetic.

It really stinks. But here is the list worth mentioning.

There are 3 versions on Blu-ray; German mediabook which is maybe a hair sharper than the rest.
The first blu-ray release from the UK which has the highest bit-rate, (maybe a hair less compression),
the box set version (or by itself which is the same bitrate) with the glasses and the crummy 3D version. But they have the original mono track.

There is also a DVD version which uses the different eye for the transfer and a 3D DVD which is the same transfer as the blu but less quality, an old Japanese VHD which is 3D and has the correct 3D title sequence but the transfer is really dark blurry and dated.

Don't forget about the original Paramount VHS release! It uses one of the alternate eyes too (I believe the same as on Crystal Lake to Manhattan). I have been bust with work and life this year so trying to put more effort into the f13 3D project I was working on stalled. BUT I did just build a new AMD Ryzen PC specifically for doing more encoding/editing/whatever on so I might play around with it a little tonight in honor the holiday.

According to bloodydisgusting, Paramount is releasing a new box-set of the series on February 13th, which is of course a Friday.

The bad news is they're still stuck in the anaglyph mindset:

what does it take to wake these people up?

Somebody with a boatload of cash to License it then to convert it to 3D

the whole set looks like an afterthought - old ugly artwork etc

it's retail $30 - no new scans or anything

but really, core fans will pay more if you give them something they want & get excited about -- I think that's an angle Paramount isn't really looking at... the old penny-wise pound-foolish concept

I really wish Scream could get their hands on this franchise

I don't think we really want that. Look at the shoddy quality of Scream's restoration/3Dmaster work in "Amityville 3" and "Metalstorm".

yeah but still those at their worst are better than anaglyph 3d

also I think Amityville 3D had a lot of issues with the original print - I remember seeing it in the theater when I was a kid & it was weirdly blurry with cross-talk in many spots

3D Film Archive does it for a very low price.

3D Film Archive could have cleared up most of the problems.

I saw a 35mm Amityville 3-D screening recently and it definitely has a lot of the same issues present in the blu-ray. Particularly tonal unevenness between left/right views.

It's a major upgrade from the anaglyph, which I found almost totally unwatchable.

There's no doubt 3-D Film Archive could do a much improved job. The most glaring issue with the current transfer relate to the missing optical effects.

I think their latest (in original release year) was "A*P*E" from 1976.

Their focus has been Golden Age 3-D, but they've also worked on what was available to them that they could licence. I imagine they will probably get around to it at some point, but it really depends on what's available.

I can tell that VHS (and CED!) transfer was from a scope print made for drive-ins, as they could never show polarized 3D and had 2D prints made for them. You can spot the anamorphic changeover cues in a few places on the old transfer, the 3D over/under prints wouldn't have had those.

Thanks for the heads up on this. Although the packaging sucks, that price is equally off-setting for me. I have come close to purchasing the tin set many times on eBay for $300 and nearly purchased the Mediamarket Mediabook on Halloween and it would have been over $400... I simply could not do it. For a $380 discount I’ll take the crappy packaging any day.

Unfortunately the new set only has parts 1-8.

I’m mostly concerned with getting the films that had previously not been released and luckily, I have 9-12 on blu-ray already.

I would LOVE to have the full set but simply refuse to pay more than $150. These were simply not “quality” movies to begin with and though the blu-rays offer a better picture it’s not a huge difference. The first few films’ budgets were less than what people are asking on Blu-ray! I rarely buy anything other than 3D or 4K blu-ray except for specific movies that dear to my heart. Streaming is usually close enough to blu-ray quality for me and doesn’t take up storage space!

I DO find it odd... Why not just include ALL of the films. I suppose it has something to do with the New Line v Paramount licensing crap. Of course, I wonder why they made the original set so limited to begin with. Wouldn’t they want to sell as many copies as possible?

Yup, licensing crap. The tin set with all the films was put out by Warner Bros (New Line's parent company) because at the time they had a licensing deal to release pretty much all of Paramount's flicks on home video and didn't need any further negotiation for that set. The deal expired so the tin had to go out of print as WB no longer had rights for 1-8. The new set is from Paramount, who don't have the rights to 9-12 and evidently didn't think it was important enough to bother negotiating for them.
