I recently watched the original theatrical version and thought it was great. Yes, it's not as bright as the previous release from years ago, but it has the look of how it was in the theater when I was it 12 times upon first release. The sound is really clear too. I just saw it in the theater again last month and that was terrible with audio distortion and the picture quality was blurry.
I think this UHD edition is fine. |

I have been checking this thread to see how the UV code redeems and have seen people have had issues with how Vudu is handling the redemption. The main issue was if you redeem at the Sony Pictures Store site nothing was getting pushed to Vudu unless you called Sony and then after that only one cut out of the 3 was porting over to Vudu. I had not seen any updates on this issue so I wanted to report that Vudu now has all 3 cuts available and all 3 do transfer into Vudu when you redeem at the Sony pictures store. Still only HDX since Vudu does not have the UHD copies yet but your UV library will show you as owning all 3 cuts in UHD.

If you guy are talking about sonypictures.com/uvredeem, I haven't been able to redeem a thing there for weeks. The site comes up, but with a message box about being down for maintenance.
But for most codes, I did find that going to Vudu.com directly and redeeming there did the trick. Sign in, then pull down the Services menu. Chris Chris |

Time stamp 3:20 mins for the discussion of HDR tone mapping and clipping on a scene from Mad Max Fury Road. You see the exact same issue where the HDR tone mapping blows out the highlights and clips badly. Calibration won’t fix this issue. On the 2017 OLEDs LG implemented Active HDR triggered by Dynamic Contrast Low. In the clip he shows how it effects the highlights. |

Finally watched this last night. Its a solid transfer & presentation although certainly not mind-blowing. IMO the extra pixels did more for the "upgrade" over the blu-ray than the HDR did this time. I know that most of the praise for these UHD releases goes to the HDR effects and I usually agree but here the level of detail(aka more pixels) in many scenes was more appreciated than highlghts here or there were. Nice grain too - it was very "filmy" without being obnoxious which is perfect to me.
If I had to pay $20 bucks or more I wouldnt have bothered but as an Amazon lightning deal I guess it was a worthwhile buyt. Nice that ALL 3 versions of the film are in 4K too. Thats not always the case so props to those that made that happen. ![]() |

Only issue I noticed with the disc were a handful of scenes that looked almost TOO good compared to the rest of the movie. It felt more like I was looking through a window as opposed to watching a film. IIRC it happened mostly towards the end of the film in some of the close-ups and some wide shots of the spaceship. All in all I really enjoyed it. I'm liking these old releases more and more after recently watching this, A Few Good Men, and Dracula. |
