Default Training Day (Blu-ray Vs. HD DVD)

According to someone in this thread who did a side by side comparison the quality is about equal despite the BD using MPEG2. This is a very interesting development IMO.

Very interesting.

As the thread says the Samsung doesn't have a button to show you data rates and codecs, basic Blu ray the sammy init, are people 100% sure it's MPEG2?

Sweet. Order that one today.

I love to be the one to say, "I TOLD YA SO" much a do about nothing.

Sony didn't become the king of Video by being stupid, and this and many other BR titles (punisher, stealth, underworld) further proves that mpeg2 is sufficient.

I bought this yesterday and can't wait to pop it in tonight for a great display of HD content. I will post personal opinions later on after viewing the movie.

True. I hope we can confirmation as to what the exact codec is soon. I suspect we'll learn more tomorrow.

IMO Training Day is the single best HD DVD out there. If the BD does match it in quality then you'll have one terrific disc!

I just finished watching the movie. I'm pretty sure that this is the best HD footage I've ever been able to bear witness to. The movie looked amazing, and I only saw one part that drew negative attention. So far, this movie sets the benchmark for future releases... I hope all of the Warner titles look this good, as I also bought Good Night, and Good Luck, and hope to buy Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang on Tues.

Good to hear! By I wouldn't stop at Warner, I would hope recent movies from all of the studios will look that good. It gives them something to strive for at the least.

The rule of thumb is the more compression the lower the quality. Although there are plenty of exceptions. It's going to take some high end independent test disc maker to seatle this one. A test disc that has a clip from the same uncompressed clip converted to the 3 codecs. My Guess is that the Pioneer will be slightly ahead in one codecs, Sony in another etc, at least HD won't have that problem as unless NEC is getting back into CE there is only Toshiba and Thompson (apparently re-badged Toshiba), so the differences there will be across models.

I'm so glad this movie is coming to Blu-Ray. This movie alone almost made my buy a HD-DVD player

Little doubt at this point, but please confirm: All of those discs have DD+, yes?

I love how HD-DVD movies are supposed to be cheaper than Blu-Ray

I don't doubt that Training Day is going to look as good on Blu-Ray as HD DVD because it simply is an excellent Master. However

Renders the pics included worthless. I don't want to see the effects of 720p I want to see full 1080i/p.

$19.95

Josh are you purposely trying to misinform here or did you just fail to do adequate research on pricing?

First review shootout in: Training Day BD vs. Training Day HD-DVD

http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/trainingday.html

Bottom line: VC-1 > MPEG2

Looks like the audio came out better for HD-DVD as well...

We'll see how other reviews start shaping up in additon to this...

So it sounds like a nice BD but in fact it does fall short when compared to the HD DVD.

Exactly.

I'm sorry, but I'm going to state this for the record.

This is subpar underachievment and it's unacceptable and unecessary.

The BDA needs to do one of several things ASAP:

1.) Abandon MPEG2. Even DirecTV is doing this!

2.) Get the BD50's out.

3.) Preferably all of the above.

I'm sorry, but if this is how it's going to come out in the early goings, there's no way in hell that I'm going to pay a thousand bucks for some nice hardware only to have these mediocre MPEG2 BD 25 discs to show for it.

No one in their right mind is going to take a raw deal like that if discs like these are the end result.

I know this is only one source and one review, but there really shouldn't be any remote doubt or chance of perceiving any differences, and yet there are.

And I have other people that I know that have already reported simillar findings, including several people that are BIG TIME Blu-Ray fanboys.

Now I already have someone who wrote me this about that review:

Quote:
As for Peter's review, I read it too, and if you'd like me to go into detail I will, but just based on the review I can see a number of problems that would question the accuracy of his assessment.

It's really hard to qualify a comparison between these formats right now. But, he's not comparing the discs as much as he's comparing the differences between the players output and variances in the calibration between the players and his display.
My response to this was: Please write it up.

I hope that the BD camp gets these disc problems fixed ASAP... This is unacceptable. Sony needs to swallow their pride and start using a more efficient codec as of yesterday. I am glad that I finally got a "quality" BD release, but knowing that the HD-DVD release is superior bothers me.

I'm also confused about the audio. The movie I have in my possession is clearly marked as having DD+. Both the reviewer and JTK's "source" have copies that don't contain the DD+ soundtrack.

The faultiness of the Samsung player is also bringing up issues with this review. I don't think anyone can know for sure how close these releases are in quality until a new player is released or the Samsung is rendered as corrected.
