Don't know whether to boycott the film outright, now, or see it in theaters via the Paramount theatrical release here.
I'm leaning towards going, but I'm not sure if I would have seen it otherwise, and I don't like the idea that Netflix can buy its way into changing my viewing habits. |

This just shows a complete lack of faith in the movie. Sure, it could be a dud, but what if it ain't? What if this hits really big with audiences & turns into the next Avatar? Except now, it can't. Also, if they're willing to take a $15 or $20 million dollar payday now instead of trusting the film to find an audience in a few months, what does this do to the sequels? Really not a fan of this development...

While this sucks for audiences, I can see why Paramount would do this. Brainy sci-fi hasn't really done well with audiences unless there's an action aspect to it. Just Look at Blade Runner 2049- they spent $150 million, and a bunch more on marketing, had incredible reviews and it still flopped. So why would they risk their money and spend even more by marketing it around the world, when they have seen it and probably know it's not going to play well with general audiences.
At least it seems they are letting Garland fulfill his complete vision and not taking it away and dumbing it down I imagine with this Paramount is going to pull a mother! with this and just release it everywhere and just accept whatever fate befalls it, especially now that they don't have as much to lose This is the future of mid-budget and independent cinema, folks. |

The general public go to theaters for light entertainment. That’s where the money is. But there’s also a lot people like brainy sci-fi films, but they’re mostly not the theater-going type. They’re usually too busy with work or study, just able to catch on with leisure time late at night before bed. This is supported by how much this type of films relatively make more money on home video than in theaters in the past. So as much as I don’t like it, maybe streaming just makes sense. Still preferable than they stop making brainy sci-fi films altogether.

I don't know anything about this. I saw the teaser before Thor: Ragnarok, and just watched the trailer. The teaser made me think of Arrival, a movie I enjoyed (with some reservations). This new trailer has mutant monsters, and that ups my interest considerably!
It seems the Netflix deal is souring some people on the film. But isn't it now more important that you see the film in theater, if you have the option, to show the companies involved that the theatrical experience matters? As far as judging them, you just have to remember that they have a bottom line to protect. They've seen the film, you haven't. Arrival did solid business last year, but a lot of that had to do with Oscar buzz. Sure, they don't always get it right. Remember Trick 'r Treat going DTV? And I'm not inclined to trust the taste of the guy who brought us Terminator: Genisys. So we'll just have to wait and see. ![]() |

"David Ellison, the head of Skydance Productions, the company that made Geostorm and Terminator: Genysis."
![]() All mockery aside, I really liked the second trailer. Garland has been responsible for some pretty excellent work (Ex Machina, Dredd), in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing this movie. Not sure about the distribution strategy. |

I'm interested to hear more about why you weren't surprised that the movie scored so low. Is it a bad movie (plot, characters, cinematography, etc.)? Or is it not a movie that is enjoyable for a general movie-going audience?

In two minds. On one side I am happy about the Netflix deal as I don't go to the cinema anymore anyway. On the other hand if your going to release early then just give me the option to buy the 4K on the same date. This looks like the sort of movie I would blind buy in a heartbeat.
