I loove my LG OLED, but they've really scored huge negative points with this player. Quote:
Maybe you should try a topic for the LG 2017 model itself? |

Regarding the only "industry standard"s I'm aware of are: Pro-TV Calibration ISF school of thought Pro-TV Calibration THX school of thought (2 aforemention likely represented in less than 7% of USA Home TV's) Various TV Vendor's multiple Default Pre-Sets And a new one that I believe will cause many TV Vendors to adopt in future CES's in Las Vegas. No TV Vendors likes to be unDone. The AVForums group already presented it in a big gathering of AV peoples. Phillips OLED. Presented receintly year 2017. That setting is essentially- Start with Pro-TV Calibrations settings then via a Electronic Chip punches up Color, Contrast, Bright, Sharpness, etc "In-Balance". They had 4 Vendor's OLED screens side by side, TV bezels hidden, Blind comparisons. Nov 2017. Many AV peoples at the presentation voted. Definitely Very Much liked by the AV peoples voting. Myself Im of this school of thought. Except I start with the LG OLED's own industry standard Pre-Sets Default and modify In-Balance with my own eyes and not use an electronic chip. For whats right in our Home TV room environment. I have Inky Blacks. And in Dolby Vision I see many black shadings without Blacks being crushed. Or Brights for that matter. From what I remember the AVForum test was two parts, one to find the preference of TVs from 5 calibrated models. The other to see which Vivid mode was preferable. Generally speaking most AV enthusiasts find Vivid to be unwatchable for film content, it's just too far away from accuracy for comfort. Philips's Vivid mode was the least aggressive of the five displays.

Whats very interesting from the OLEDs Blind Test results is that AV peoples said for just the various Pro-calibrated OLEDs... the display images results of all of them looked essentially alike. Many AV peoples could'nt distingiish a difference. Implying the least expensive OLED was just as Image good as the most expensive OLED. But then they all are Pro TV calibrated to achive the same effect. So I wonder if a good Pro Calibrated LED LCD TV image would look the same too compared to Pro Calibrated OLED. I believe the Blind OLED test sampled various Movies from Movie Studios. Chip75 I not sure your stated "Philips's Vivid mode was the least aggressive of the five displays." is how I would analyse it. Phillips punched up many settings over the Pro Calibrated settings. Focusing on punching In-Balance. And got a lot of AV peoples vote. Also I believe it was mentioned that as AV peoples entered the AV building___ on display was this Phillips Display with the electronic Chip applied showing a movie. But noOne knows it was the Phillips. It gathered a lot of Head Turning among the AV peoples. The AV Forum heads supplied two URL links that goes into all the specifics Last edited by E6AtmosVuduDV; 12-08-2017 at 07:14 PM. Reason: Finishing |

I was just told by LG USA tier 2 support that a DV update now exists but you can only get it through shipping it in for service. They are sending me return labels. Does anyone know if they truly have a fix? Maybe there is a hardware update needed in addition to firmware? I hate to ship it in only to find a rep didn’t have accurate information. I’d greatly appreciate any verified information anyone may have.

LCDs can get brighter, but OLEDS can get darker, so it would really depend on the environment and lighting conditions (and content), along with personal preferences. |

Chip75.
Interesting. Thank you. I'm quite serious to get a 2018 LCD, LED type set. With screen bigger than we have at home. Also very Excited how my UP970 would perform with it. Current view is that it will not be a LG Display. |

Sounds like a BS story to me; I very, very much doubt they would install the older firmware with DV for you. |

Try Prometheus 4k. There is lots Reference Level Blacks in that movie. See if it resolves Inky Blacks in your UP970. Solomonj DV from the UP970 is Just Amazingly Stunning. Other members on this Thread have concurred. If I did'nt have it____ I would myself go over any hoops to get it. Myself I can't say I would Do That for any other Player's DV. Did you ask LG Tier 2 support if the FW is new. And not the same as the FW Rockylll and I gotten in August which we reported on this thread. Of cource if there is a new DV FW... We will all see it at CES 2018 on January 9th when there will be a Kazallion Vendor Buyers, International Press there at LG's Huge Presentation Stage Last edited by E6AtmosVuduDV; 12-09-2017 at 04:27 PM. Chip75 I came across this. Its seems very cool, my cup of tea. And I only live couple hours from Los Angeles... http://socalht.com/calibration-training.html Im not interested in self certification so thats Perfect. But I do love playing with toys. For my own TV's I would calibrate But with punch up as well QUANTATIVELY and In-Balance. Real Movie Director's Intent is not quite right for me. Tho I may calibrate one HDMI-in TV Port for it. Then switch the HDMI Cable to my main input for my own Custom Settings. My only concern is IF the Calibration Industry have out yet the Proper Mappings for Director's Intent for HDR10 and DV yet? Or is it still Work In Progress till 2018 or beyond? I don't want DV, HDR10 mapping software as partial guess work. When will Home Calibration software like Disney, Spears have DV, HDR10 mapping? LG only provides over-the-air updates for this player. Downloadable firmware files do not exist.

I think at the moment there's always going to be a balance between brightness and detail because of the tone mapping required. It's still in flux, but there are reference guidelines in place for some criteria.

So, getting a bit off-topic from the Dolby Vision update - grrr, be better LG, fix this (all that jazz) - the globe icon, signaling whether there is a connection to the internet, randomly comes up when I'm watching anything through my up970. I've tried re-establishing my connection (successfully), prohibiting automatic connection for BD-Live through settings and stopping an attempt at internet connection by removing Wi-Fi settings all together.
Still, it appears at will - not often, maybe once a film or once every other film, but it persists. Any thoughts or solutions folks? |

Try plug a blank USB stick in.
Sometimes UP970 needs extra processing space. |

Post #1629 at AVSForum today is interesting. Given that many of us have the UP970 from Best Buy...
