May sound like a newb question so I didn't want to make a post for it, this seemed like a good place (mods?)
Do you think we'll get a 4kBD release of the LOTR/Hobbit movies soon? I wouldn't normally expect, but it looks like Warner Brothers is pretty happy to ***** out their popular franchises for a 4K double dip, such as the Nolan movies and Harry Potter just this year. With that in mind, is it not only a matter of time until we get to see the LOTR movies in glorious HDR? |

Maybe, just maybe remix LOTR to Dolby Atmos too in order to match them with The Hobbit. |

He may yet touch up some VFX but they'll still be upscales from 2K. Same goes for LOTR, just because it was shot on 35mm doesn't mean it was finished on 35mm. That's not to say that they couldn't rebuild either set of shows from scratch e.g. locating, scanning, cleaning, grading & editing the 35mm footage on LOTR, and doing the necessary for the 5K RED footage on the Hobbitses, along with whatever upscales/rebuilds of the VFX are deemed necessary, but this is a process that would take years to complete and would cost many millions of dollars to do so.
Considering that Warners baulked at the prospect of rebuilding just the extra features (Michael Pellerin wanted to restructure them to match the 'a day in the life...' style of the Hobbit EE extras) what makes people think that they'd pay to properly uprez the movies? These will be 2K upscales all round, and if King Kong is any indication of how odd some of that early DI fudgery looks on UHD (along with that whacked-out HDR grade) then I'm kinda fearful for how LOTR will ultimately turn out. Hobbit not so much because they're much more modern. |

It’s not a 4k movie, but will likely get an eventual home 4k release; Guillermo del Toro personally signed off on the home HDR10 grade of The Shape of Water.

Hopefully both. But I have no idea if they'll release this on disc. I just know they made the HDR grade. With all the awards buzz, I'd be willing to bet this makes it to UBD.

It would definitely benefit if the mastering tech knows what he is doing. |
