Well instead of going all out cheap with my Apple TV 4K, I am going down the route of top quality films on disc and others on iTunes.
Get Out on iTunes in 4K was fantastic, shame didn’t get the DTS:X but oh well, it was £4.99 But Dunkirk on disc, absolutely breath taking. I saw this at the British Science Museum in 70m IMAX and the experience at home on my 79 inch screen was a great reminder. I actually preferred the film on this second viewing. Stunning. |

Some of us, here, at an enthusiast forum, are very pleased with our current set-up, but understand that the pursuit of better audio and video over the course of years is rewarding. Constructive criticism is a good thing. Hearing an inconvenient idea isn't supposed to be construed as an insult. Few here or anywhere have it all figured out such that there's only a single "right way".
As for Atmos/X, my primary criticism is that the masses are attracted to it to the express detriment of all else which contributes to proper multi-channel surround. It's a quick sugar rush and all else which might be inconvenient is ignored. Since you aren't personally likely to be offended, then I'll offer that L/R speaker position is critical. The boundaries are the enemy. Moving L/R well off of the back wall and out toward the side walls (not too close!) will change the experience dramatically. Now then, this isn't always convenient. But if certain things are taken into account at the outset, then much more is possible. Bass traps in the room corners makes for an incredible improvement. Ya don't just up and stick some acoustic treatment wherever it will make an improvement. The room, for most, must look and function a certain way. I get that. But if we can't even discuss these things here, then where are free to do so without the logical fallacies flying? Anyhow, here's hoping discourse on social media improves. We'll all benefit. |

I posted the wiki link on Christopher Nolan before, it's a must read, all of it:
• https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Nolan Education is a day-to-day constant affair, there are no rules of laws in sound creation. The same with camera's angles and chronology in construction of the stories told. The artist is the master, us we are @ the mercy of his art. To penetrate his state-of-mind in the proper order is the challenge of our discovery and intimacy. Some technical adjustments are performed by the masters. Nolan is an explorer, and influential in his art. Dunkirk was the toughest film to score musically. Nolan and Zimmer created from a collaborated effort of very high caliber a magic tour-de-force. Happy New Year! |

It is ok to deviate from perfect reference, we are not robots or geeks slaved of our beliefs and conventions. We are high calibrated humans with tremendous ability and versatility in adapting to our environment and the people living in it.

Can some one double check the 32:35 mark towards the bottom of the screen in the black of the actors jacket(about where his buttons are). There appears to be a white dot that flashes. Thought it was a quick reflection off of his button when he raises his arm to eat the pizza but it appears to be just a white dot when going frame by frame. Didn’t know if it’s just this disc or an error. Thanks

Thank you Geoff! You are quite knowledgeable in this stuff and I’m surprised no one has asked but what causes that faint horizontal line that runs about three inches off the bottom of the screen during the stretcher scene? You can see it at 12:03 mark and continually appears for almost a minute I’d say. It’s on the blu ray and the 4K and I’ve checked multiple screens to confirm it’s not the display or disc related. Thank you again.

Yeah it runs for about a minute and it is not in every scene or a certain scene cut into the others. The side shot where they are running with the stretcher when the camera shifts down you can really see it in the beige dock(floor area). Parallel with it. I would be interested to know if that line is on the digital version as well because it’s on the 4K and the blu ray.
Reminds me of the good ole vertical banding problem I had on a 65’ oled only it is horizontal! |
