I don't care about the way the clown was presented in the book. If I wanted to discuss the book I'd be on a book discussion forum. We were talking about the way the clown presents himself in the movies. Several of us prefer the 1990 version. If you prefer the 2017 version of Pennywise then good for you. I strongly think the 1990 Pennywise is a better representation of the way a child perceives a clown. A real life little Georgie wouldn't have stopped to talk to something like that looked the way Skarsgard did.

Well you were saying the 2017 Pennywise wasn't good and I was just pointing out that it was in fact closer to how the character was portrayed in the original novel (without which we wouldn't have either film). To dismiss discussion of how closely a book adaptation adheres to the book because "I don't care about the book, we're talking about the movies" is kind of not leaving the discussion open to any actual discussion (in my eyes).

Also in all three versions of the story (book, 1990 film, 2017 film) Georgie is not scared or finding Pennywise approachable. He's just confused why a clown is in a storm drain.

The face of the clown in the stormdrain was white, there were funny tufts of red hair on either side of his bald head, and there was a big clown-smile painted over his mouth.

He wore a baggy suit with big orange-pompom buttons; on his hands were cartoon gloves.

The figure was dressed in what appeared to be a white-silver clown suit. It rippled around him in the polar wind. There were oversized orange shoes on his feet. They matched the pompom buttons which ran down the front of his suit.

a hideously grinning clown whose face sweated white greasepaint, whose mouth curved up in a leering red vampire smile, whose eyes were bright silver coins.

Standing by Bowers was a thing in a clown suit. It stood perhaps eight feet tall. Its suit was silvery. Orange pompoms ran down the front. There were oversized funny shoes on its feet.

Almost a perfect match apart from no orange shoes.

The only thing they have right here is the pompoms. Even the hair is the wrong colour.

The remake Pennywise is much closer in looks to the one portrayed in the novel. Pennywise is also much scarier which fits more with Pennywise as portrayed in the novel. Tim Curry was an excellent Pennywise, but as a fan of the novel I have to say that Skarsgard's is much closer to Pennywise as Stephen King described him in the original novel. Also the film showcases that Pennywise is not IT's main form. The original film overuses Pennywise (IT nearly always appears as Pennywise whereas IT's supposed to have many different forms - with Pennywise being IT's favourite).

Personal preferences aside, when it comes to accuracy to the book the remake wins. While both are very different interpretations of the character, the Skarsgard Pennywise adheres more to the spirit of the book.
Focusing on minutiae of costume design (which totally ignores the explicitly stated comparisons to Bozo, Clarabell and Ronald McDonald, all clowns from the mid-to-late 20th Century) misses the forest for the trees. The simple fact of the matter is that the novel depicts Pennywise as a friendly, inviting, conventional clown who only exposes his “vampire smile” and true evil nature once he’s seduced you in too close. Nobody—aged five, twelve, or forty—would get within half-a-mile of the Pennywise in the new movie. It’s asking too much of an intelligent audience’s willing suspension of disbelief.

I usually buy Steelbook when I can but there's something about that yellow raincoat and red balloon on the regular edition. Does anyone have a picture of the back of the Bestbuy Steelbook yet? Is it just black smoke continuing around?

I'm finding it strange that there has been no competitive, initial-release price drops on this like there usually is on big titles. I'd normally expect this to drop to at least $25. Everyone is just siting at $30 ($35 for the steelbook). The digital UHD is just $20.
Has there been other new, big titles you've folks have bought recently where there has been no pre-release & first couple day post-release price drop?

Looking back at Curry’s character, he certainly was a tad cheesy in some instances. I like both films for what they are, but I was pleasantly surprised with the blend of CGI in the 2017 version. I thought it blurred the lines of reality vs make believe through the eyes of the kids. In my opinion, It needed to be a tad over the top to capture the essence of his evil.
