Paramount releasing Star Trek on HD DVD - Blu-ray Forum

hey guys,

I don't understand studios sometimes. However, paramount announced that they will be releasing star trek season 1 exclusively on HDDVD

luckily for me, I never liked star trek, but it still anoys me that a neutral studio releases exclusively on one format. Maybe they will make it up by releasing Transformers exclusively on Blu?

I hope it looks like crap. never cared for star trek. a few of the movies are cool. maybe they'll release those blu ray exclusive. wrath ok khan exclusive to blu would be cool.

It was mentioned at CES. The HD DVD PG paid for this "exclusive" period like they did for The Matrix from Warner.

I was hoping Paramount would reconsider. But, I suppose a contract is a contract.

SRP: $217.99 for Season 1.

This for a format who's supporters whine that people aren't interested in paying over $200 for a PLAYER.

I've been watching the re-mastered TOS. It's pretty cool to see the old shows cleaned up with totally new FX shots.

Price sounds about right, I wouldn't pay that much for it, but I guess there are people out there. After all how many people bought Sopranos Season 6 Part 1? They spent 89.95 to 129.99 for a half season. I’m sure they’re going to buy the Part 2 (and the price will most likely be about the same as part 1) so they’re going to spend somewhere around 179.90 to 259.98 for a season of the Sopranos

So going by the Sopranos, Star Trek Season 1 doesn't surprise me.

Why would Paramount even waste there time on hd-done?? To be honest, if this came out on BD, I would not take it if were free, but that is beside the point.

exclusives mean problem if its not on BD. imagine Transformers exclusively on HDdvd, because of a contract. this is why i don't like exclusive. HDdvd seems to have thing for snatching things off to hurt BD whatever way possible. the solution BD group needs to start pulling that off, and you will see how much it hurt HD DVD's sales.

HD-DVD Promotions Group got some serious cash to get these timed-exclusives from Paramount. But it's like Warner's release of The Matrix. It won't be exclusive for long.

I think the news about Spielberg's CE3K on BD is far more damaging to HD-DVD.

At this price level, it will have about the same effect that the Matrix releases had -zilch!

HD DUD owners are not typical early adopters. I get the distinct feeling a lot of them are only Xbox 360 owners who bought the add-on and can barely afford it.

Quality is not their top concern and I don't think ST-TOS has the draw that the movies did. I liked the series, but I think that putting it on HD would have minimal benefit over the DVD and I don't think an old TV series is worth this kind of money - just for season 1!

I'm a huge fan, and I remember posting a while ago I'd probably pay whatever to get it on blu. I take that back now.

The original season dvd prices were ridiculous, and the titles sit on the shelves gathering dust. I only hope I can eventually pick up something like this on blu from amazon for 60% of the price sometime next year.

I think it is only coming out on HD DVD/DVD combo at this point. No Blu-ray and no DVD.

Generally this would be infeasible. But, I guess the volumes are low enough, and the price high enough.

Well on 10 HD DVD/DVD combos it runs 217$. In stores most single disc BD releases run 5$ cheaper than their HD DVD/DVD combo. So had it not been combo it would have been able to be considerably cheaper. Plus 10 HD DVDs are roughly 300GB of storage. The same space could be done on BD with only 6 50GB discs.

So you have 10 combo discs or 6 regular discs. If it comes out on BD Paramount could drop the price to 120$ and still make bank. And HD DVD fanatics say BD has nothing to offer with the extra space.

Not a huge Star Trek fan here. I watched it growing up, but its not something I will buy.

Either way, I think the price is insane. 200+ for 1 season? Im sorry, but no thanks. I don't think I would pay that for Aliens either. Maybe. It all depends.

I am starting to see alot of these high prices just because its HD. I can understand a little more cost, but a significant cost like this is excessive.

Well, remember Amazon has 30% off so I guess you could pick up Star Trek for $152.59. Now if the price is the same for Blu-ray it's cheaper than Sopranos if part 1&2 cost the same.

Star Trek $152.59 to $217.99
Sopranos Part 1 & 2 $179.90 to $259.98

I'd like a boxed set of the films, or even TNG. I may or may not buy TOS when they put it on BD. I liked it all(yes, I am a recovering Trekkie), but that price is rediculous, especially for one season. $125(close to original DVD set prices at launch) is a little more reasonable, but I'll still wait another 6months to a year for them to drop down to $60 like the DVD versions(of ST TOS).
