In your opinion, is this Oldman's best lead performance?? |

Not for me. I mean, technically, yes maybe it's his best acting performance in an Oscar-type role, but personally I thought his best roles were in stuff like True Romance or The Professional, or even Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead. The man is a chameleon.

I wouldn't say it's his "best" but rather one of his best. I don't even know if I have a "best" Oldman performance because he has been so good in so many different roles. I can only describe Oldman's acting as being consistently great. I will say this. He definitely deserves the Golden Globe that he just won and I believe that he deserves the Oscar if he should get it.

The main knock I've heard on the performance is all he does is yell but there's so much more to it than that. He literally disappears into the character (well as much as an actor like Oldman can disappear) and without the performance the film simply wouldn't work. To me, that says he did an outstanding job.

I hadn't heard that criticism, but anyone who is saying that is doing so based on the trailer and has not actually seen the movie. There are only a few times in the movie he even yells, and I'm pretty sure almost all of them are in the trailer.

Honestly, this movie delivered more emotion and more story in any one scene than all of Nolan's Dunkirk. I'll take character driven story that elicits real emotion over a shallow procedural every time.

What I love about Oldman's role in The Professional... is that, there were the quiet moments... and then the yelling. But the yelling always seemed appropriate, and not yelling for the sake of yelling, but only when appropriate... ala the Michael Corleone character. |

Sadly, I found this film to be aggressively average. I'm a fan of Joe Wright's other films but didn't see any of his usual innovation on display. There were a couple of interesting shots and scenes, but it was all pretty standard. Oldman is good as a bundle of jowls and quirks, and he conveys the sense of urgency, outrage, and fatigue that must have gripped that war room. It reminded me of Kenneth More's performance of a determined, fraying officer in Sink the Bismarck!.
I think the film suffers from a weak script. The dialogue was full of cliches and overused tropes. Dialogue from the Movie: King: I haaaaaaaaaate Winston. Neville: The test results came back. I definitely have cancer. King: I'm going to leave Winston. Churchill Wife: I love you, but you're cranky. later Churchill Wife: I'm here! We're out of money! later Churchill Wife: Remember me? I'm having my picture taken! later Churchill Wife: Me again! I'm popping in to let you know I'm listening to the radio! British politician #1: Where is Winston? His chair is empty. British politician #2: He's being political. The empty chair is a motif. Churchill (to driver): I once got lost on the subway. This will be important later. |

it's a historical piece, not based on bombs and explosions, so I can wait to watch it when it gets to Crackle. No need to get out and see this on the big screen.

I strongly disagree there. The movie has magnificent cinematography and massive scale does in fact lends itself to a big screen viewing.

I enjoyed it a lot, I have few reservations, as tremendous as both Oldman and the make up work is, something about his eyes poking out of the prosthetics kept distracting. I also found the score intrusive, some moments that could have been more effective with some more minimalist sound design (which the film has a few expert moments of) are sort of sunken by the over-theatrics of the score.
No problems with the subway scene, the whole film is quite larger than life and it’s a diversion that offers some levity. I think the problem is that it’s the axis for the entire final third of the film, so the fact it is somewhat more removed from reality might distract, but it never really bothered me. I think the only this I was a bit cold on was where it ended. I understand it’s where the whole arc of the film ends. But as something that has been drilled into nearly everyone by this point, it’s pretty apparent that the film was more to get some awards and then go down as an easy go to for History teachers to fill up a lesson with. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good entertaining watch, but there’s nothing much challenging here. Last edited by Foggy; 01-14-2018 at 03:27 PM. |

I was surprised how much I really enjoyed this. The cinematography/ighting (the live broadcast especially) and sets are amazing. I think he only yells twice in the movie.
