How do I disable Dolby Vision so I can compare it to the HDR version? I have a LG C6 and an Oppo-203. Granted, I could always play it on my Xbox One X, but I'd rather compare the two using the same UHD player.

I'm just dipping my toes into UHD and only have two titles so far (John Wick and E.T.). From the sounds of it, this titles supports two kinds of HDR. I know my panel supports all of the available formats but how does one chose which to use? Is that in a menu on the disc or in the players or panels settings?

*edit* looks like the poster above asked the same thing.

Go into your Oppo settings and switch the HDR setting to forced and then power cycle.

The two movies you listed just support standard HDR10. Not many discs support Dolby Vision, but if they do they will automatically play in tDolby Vision if you have the compatible setup. So when you put in IT, it will automatically play in Dolby Vision, which is typically a good thing.

That isn't it's purpose. They exist to be eye catching. Studios and retailers could not care less if the Blu-Ray case arrives "scratch free during shipping".

If you say so, but the slip isn't anymore eye catching because it's the same exact art and instead of being the sleek sleeve behind the plastic protective case it is a raggedy piece of cardboard with stickers stuck all over it. They don't want people constantly trading them in and returning them because the cover got scratched or had sticky goop from the stickers that wouldn't come off. That is why they include them. The idea that it's eye catching is hilarious to me. Believe me, they had no idea that people would get all OCD about it and refuse to by discs in pristine condition because it didn't have a protective shipping sleeve on it. People are going online and paying 5$ for a piece of cardboard that looks ugly and provides no further artwork or collectability. Absurd in my opinion but to each there own. If he likes to do it or you like to do it that is fine with me. It's not my time being wasted or my money and mental strain over such things. Whatever makes you happy. If I go to bestbuy I don't get disappointed when they don't have them. I don't worry about them when I order from Amazon, I don't go searching for them on E-Bay and spending more money on them. I don't waste my time pulling them off each time I watch a film and my collection has a nice neat and consistent sleek look without them. There is no dust on them because they sit vertically up against each other lol.

Okie dokie so I had a chance to watch the opening scene in both standard HDR and DV this morning and I vastly preferred the latter. Much better blacks and the colors from Georgie’s yellow raincoat and the red lights on his walkie-talkie really stood out amongst the otherwise dreary setting. Sadly, watching that scene three times in the last 12 hours has absolutely crushed my soul and robbed me of the last shred of innocence I still clung to. Gonna go throw up now.

Atmos track rocks btw.

$30 for a WB title is to be expected.

I have a 203 and 65C6P as well. There is not one DV title I own that doesn't lose thier absolute black letterbox bars in low light scenes. I currently own 11 DV titles.

People can't seem to agree on this. I doubt I am going to rush out and buy a new Blu-ray player once the firmware update comes out for my TV. I will probably wait and see what users who own my TV over and AVS have to say about it before deciding. My X800 has zero problems and loads instantly. I would hate to pay 3X as much for an inferior player just to use DV if it doesn't make a real impact on things. I am pretty perceptive and if you see a difference it is likely that I will also. Still, different panels will react differently to it and nobody knows how it will react on my display. Keeping fingers crossed. It would be great to have another visual boost worth getting excited over.

I don't know if all of them do, but yeah, most of them can't hold a consistent black letterbox for me either. (I don't recall Transformers: TLK doing it.)

Oppo 203 and 65C6P, as well. "It" has the same issue. To that point, I did the unimaginable and stopped the movie 5 minutes in and disabled DV on my Oppo. Started the movie back in HDR and enjoyed the rest of the film. Varying black levels are just too damn distracting, especially for a movie that takes place so much in the dark like "It," improved colors and 12bit processing be damned.

I'm at the point where I may just leave my Oppo settings as is and forget about the whole DV. Improvements are there and noticeable to me, but I just can't get passed the floating black bars.

Do you know if LG has the same problem as the Oppo? Is it your player or DV itself that is causing the problem.

Hard to say exactly where it happens. Maybe the Oppo?

The only reason why I think it might be there is because when watching DV content ANYWHERE else, Vudu, Netflix, etc. the same issue has not occurred. This is via USB stick, or in the LG's Smart Apps.

I'm with you on that, except I'd be looking to HDR10+ down the line if Samsung ever updates 2016 TV's like they said. My old UHD player was so bad, and the X800 has been like heaven for me since getting it cheap around Black Friday... I don't want to rock my own boat. I don't want to deal with return window anxiousness until I get clear, well articulated information on everything I'd like to know.

I’ve never experienced the “grey bars” phenomenon with my LG player, or with Dolby Vision Netflix streams through the TV. I did notice, however, that with DV if I crank the brightness way up, the bars turn grey. But I don’t need the brightness way up, and the image looks perfectly balanced with my current settings.

IT played beautifully in DV and looked terrific.

I have an Oppo 203 and an LG B6. I’ve watched over 12 DV discs and my bars have never been anything but black. Just finished IT and as much as I loved the PQ in The Dark Tower, Valerian, and Transformers, this is my new favorite DV disc. That sucks that people are having issues, especially since no one seems to know what’s causing it, because this looks stunning when everything is working as IT should.

Back to talking about this release, I am really happy with the purchase. I watched this movie during it's theatrical run and knew that it was going to be a real treat at home to watch.

One thing I noticed though, on occasions later in the movie the sky and clouds looked fake to me. Not sure of the time stamps, but they looked odd. Anyone else see this?

HDR10+

Oh no. Are sure you're not that other guy named Heat? You both joined in January of 2017, so I do see a connection. Please say isn't so?

I'm kidding of course. Or am I?

Never posted a screenshot before but I did take a quick pic of this lovely little shot. Probably doesn't really do it justice but I throught it was one of the nicer highlights in the film, especially compared to the BD:

I don't know if they looked quite fake, but I did notice that the skies in a few scenes did look particularly...intense. I recall thinking that near the beginning when you first see Mike Hanlon on his bike, and also later in the film right before they go into the abandoned house.

What's going on with the beginning of chapter 3? A UHD in 2018 shouldn't have squares in the sky.
