I do agree that (opening scene excluded) that this felt more like a "fun" horror movie than a "scary" horror movie. I do wonder what might have been if they had focused more on the psychological elements instead of jump scares, but I was able to accept it for what it is and enjoy it. Even if I think it could have been more interesting with a different approach, they did do a good job at what they were trying to do.

Good to hear it’s not too scary (hopefully my wife can keep her eyes open half the time then)!

Opening scene was almost perfection.

Yeah, that was the one scene in the movie I felt managed to somehow be even more effective than the book.

Definitely.
[Show spoiler]For a monster that eats children, he sure doesn't attack them like he initially does in the Georgie scene. Almost making that first scene feel out of character, or out of place. He appears to get more satisfaction out of terrifying the kids than actually following through with feeding on them.

It felt like it was a director's uncut version of those PG13 horror films. Snip a few seconds here and there and it would lose the R rating.

To expand on that, the kids did not seem frightened of IT.
A kid's hair literally changes to white in the book (and I think the 90s tv movie), these kids can't stop cutting up with each other.
I thought it was pretty scary. Real life kids put in these situations would have been terrified, and unable to respond in the fashion they do in the film.
[Show spoiler] It almost seemed pretty far-fetched that they relentlessly pursued the clown as much as they did, through the haunted house and the sewers.

Pennywise feeds on their fear. He makes this clear. Eating them outright wouldn’t make sense. They have to be properly scared first. “Cooked” in a way.

As for it being far-fetched about the kids’s Reactions, the film is a genre throwback to movies like ET and The Goonies. Asking why the kids aren’t cataronically terrified of Pennywise is like asking why the Goonies weren’t catatonically terrified of the Fratellis. IT is a genre throwback to the supernatural horror slashers and the fun kid’s adventure films that populated the 80’s.

Hank Bowers hair turns white and his character wasnt handled as I expected him to be. He was supposed to end up in a mental ward and was blamed for everything. Maybe they'll handle all of that in the next movie. I hope so. We shall see.

And yes - the constant potty mouth humor got old fast. The first cracks were OK but then it just made the whole thing NOT scary and way too tongue in cheek. Hated that.

Still a decent movie overall but there is plenty wrong here and things they screwed up.

The kids didn't seem terrified of Pennywise?

Did we watch the same movie?

[Show spoiler]>Eddie was absolutely mortified by the Leper.

>Stan was so terrified of the physical manifestation of the lady from the painting, that it ended up causing conflict and heightened stress and uncertainty between 'The Losers Club'; ultimately leading to him panicking and blaming his friends, for the encounter that he has in sewer.

>Ben ran a 4.3 40-time in the basement when the headless kid was running after him.

>Bev's encounter with her sink, left her shaking and speechless, not to mention cowering in the corner of her bathroom, while her dead gently stroked her hair and talked to her, in the most uncomfortable of tones.

I mean, sure they develop their inner courage to battle Pennywise, but the kids definitely have their moments of being utterly terrified by this thing.

“Potty mouth” humor is a kids thing. It was a pretty realistic depiction of kids. I was relieved they weren’t “golly Gee” sanitized depictions. It would have been stupid.

Yeah, Richie's humor was awesome--and felt like a realistic portrayal of how kids actually talk.

"You guys are lucky we're not measuring dick sizes."

Yeah, I guess we did talk like that, didnt we? I dunno, just a few times it happened during what were supposed to be more tense moments.

Part 2 hopefully will move from being a comedy/horror film due to the main characters being kids to a much more serious horror movie with adults. That and the fact Pennywise has to wait 27 years to exact his revenge will make for a much more pissed off clown.

I have watched my 4k disc twice, two nights in a row and thought it was a great movie. Sure it can't match the book but for a movie based on a King book, it was one of the best. Can't wait for chapter 2.

Just finished and I loved IT. For a long run time it flew by. Felt it had a good balance of humour and horror. The PQ was reference. I’m always leery of horror films presentations since the majority have a lot of dark scenes and they looked great. There is so much detail in the shadows, black levels were perfectly inky. Highlights were spectacular, every single scene in daylight is eye candy. HDR is right up there with the best. Primaries were perfectly lifelike but still vivid. The red balloons put a smile on my face. Detail is always on point. I popped in the BD after to compare and it’s a massive upgrade. So much more nuance on the UHD. The Atmos track ranks up there with Blade Runner, Hasksaw and Sicario for me. The low end was nice and deep but not boomy or overbearing.

This disc is why I love this format.
