I have processed both the original Final Cut Blu-ray 5.1 mix and the UHD Dolby Atmos 7.1 and the Atmos mix is overall a louder track.
There is a fair amount more content in the LFE channel of the Atmos mix. Corresponds with with an example I have previously commented on, around the 27-30 minute mark. Chapters 10 & 11 for both BR and UHD. Dolby Atmos 7.1 ITU-R BS.1770-3 Loudness: -19.35 LUFS Dolby TrueHD 5.1 ITU-R BS.1770-3 Loudness: -21.18 LUFS This is the first time I have extracted an audio track from a h.265 file with eac3to, so there is potential for perhaps some error or incorrect handling of an Atmos track. Also I used an older MKV file I had made with MakeMKV of the blu-ray of the FC years ago, hopefully it was ripped correctly then. What is interesting is with the original blu-ray there is evidently some clipped audio samples, whereas the Atmos track has at least limited most channels to a max of -0.02. [Show spoiler] For whichever reason eac3to believes the Atmos track is not full 24bits, that maybe an error. While the DTHD reads as full 24bits. I have had a similar situation when I compared the Casino Royale tracks. DTHD read as less than 24bit and the DTSMA was full 24bits. In that case however all versions had effectively the exact same dynamic range characteristics. Last edited by KMFDMvsEnya; 01-05-2018 at 03:52 PM. |

Atmos is louder than the 5.1 Final Cut mix found on the original blu-ray, by an average of nearly 2dbs.
Factor out the extra two surround back channels and the average per channel is higher. Some channels are 2-5dbs louder on the Atmos track than the 5.1 mix. Bit more dynamic range compression applied to the Atmos track, which helps avoid hard clipping but the limiting in various bits can sound a bit harsh. If you want to hear two distinct examples of the mixes being different then start up Chapters 10 and 11 to do your own comparison. Take note of the bass in each example. |

I finally got around to watching Blade Runner on 4K tonight. This has to be the best looking 4K disc I have watched to date, and that includes Dunkirk. Absolutely stunning. This film has never looked this good. Add to that, the fantastic atmos sound design on this disc. I loved the way this disc sounded and that's it. Vangelis music was just amazing in this film and this UHD version really does it justice. I have owned the original 5 disc set that was first released years ago and will be keeping it for the other versions included in that set but this new 4K is just top flight all the way.
I am really looking forward to next week's 4K for Blade Runner 2049. I just hope they do as well, if not better, than was done for the original |

With 2049's home release edging closer I finally got around to re-watching the original. The first time I saw this was "The Director's Cut" blown-up for Cinerama in 1992/1993. I remember being blown away by how well the optical effects held up on such a large screen and this release doesn't disappoint. Simply gorgeous.
Just as my set doesn't rate the highest HDR specs, my audio is limited to 7.1. But just as the grain, resolution and color saturation blew me away on the visual side, the 7.1 is equally impressive with its discrete placement and robust sonic range. Yeah, there's a tinniness in the dialogue that betrays the vintage but the score and sound effects are deeply immersive enough that I'm that much more excited for eventual ATMOS hardware. The schism between the thin dialogue and the rich soundtrack is a tad jarring but it makes sense. I'd forgotten how phantasmagorical the sound design becomes in the final act (say, from around Pris' final scene through Batty's final scene). Splendidly unsettling. I continued to watch this today.
From where Roy meets Sebastian to Decker and Pris fight. Wow, I am 100% sold on Atmos. It was like watching a new movie. I have had every form of surround since the Laserdisc and this literally blew me away. No hearing sounds from direct left or right, the whole room just filled with sound. And this is with a standard 7.1 setup. |

I haven't checked out the 4K for Unforgiven yet but I have heard, as you note, that it is one of the best 4K discs available right now. I missed grabbing it when Best Buy had it for $14.99 around Black Friday and I am really sorry about that. It's now back up to $31.99 ($28.34 on Amazon)!!!! I'll have to wait for the next sale point, hopefully not too far down the road.

I had ordered this during black friday and just now got to watch it last night with my new 4k/Atmos set up. The atmos completely blew me away.
However, I did have a couple issues. At around 55 minutes and 120 minutes the picture froze, went white then green and did all sorts of crazy stuff until picking up the film several seconds past the initial freeze. I rewinded and it happened at the same spots a second time. Is my disc defective? Anyone else have a similar problem like this? I was playing it on the Xbox One X. |

I bought this release during the duration I was banned since I was a trolling asshat. Fine release to me but I'm still keeping the rest of the BLADE RUNNER stuff in my BLADE RUNNER collection.
