Default Kids In The Hall: The Complete Collection

The Kids in the Hall - 'The Complete Collection' Returns to DVD, with 'Death Comes To Town' Included!

Between 2004 and 2006, A&E Home Video released the five seasons of the show individually, and finished with a complete series megaset of the show. Then, in 2011, they revisited it with the Death Comes to Town mini-series. Those items have gone out of print, however, and as such it can be quite pricey for fans to acquire the entire program.

Now, with word being reported that Lorne Michaels wants to bring the show back, our friends at Mill Creek Entertainment are going back to the 1989 comedy program and bringing out their release of Kids In The Hall - The Complete Collection.

Scheduled for release on February 6th, the 14-disc set will include uncensored episodes, plus the 2010 mini-series The Kids in the Hall: Death Comes to Town. Digital copies of the episodes are also included as a bonus, via MCE's proprietary digital streaming service, "Watch Mill Creek." You'll additionally get these special features:

Audio Commentaries

Compilation Episodes

Archival Footage

Full Sketch Listings

Cast Bios

AND MORE!

Price for all of this is just $69.98 SRP! More details are expected to come in the following week or so, when Mill Creek Entertainment sends over their official press release about Kids In The Hall - The Complete Collection.

Including the full pilot actually makes this a slight upgrade on previous sets. It was available as a standalone disc, but never included in any other release. I like the idea of taking up less shelf space, but I wonder if the reduced number of discs means more compression on the transfers...

I thought the original season one set included the pilot as an extra.

That actually sounds like a legit great set. $70 is a bit much for a DVD nowadays, but come on, it's Mill Creek. It's not going to street for that much.

Yeah it's $40 at AMAZON right now. I expect it to be in the $20-$25 range not too long after it's released.

It doesn't, but your confusion is understandable. The season one set includes two "Best of" episodes, one of which has a lot of clips from the pilot, and the marketing material plays this aspect up to a degree where I'm sure a lot of people believed the pilot itself was included.

I have the original A&E sets of the original series as well as Death Comes to Town, and the separate pilot DVD.

This new Mill Creek set says "uncensored." Were the original releases censored? Does this just mean that they won't 'bleep' out swear words that were originally 'bleeped' out?

Given that it's a Mill Creek release, I anticipate that it will be pretty cheap to obtain not long after release, so I don't necessarily mind double-dipping. But I'm really only interested in doing so if there's at least some difference in the on-disc contents that make this worth double-dipping on.

Having all of the content digitally does ad a little value to it. I don't like relying on digital as my main way of buying content (as a rule, I pretty much only redeem codes that come with physical releases), but having it as an option is nice.

Most likely it will. That it typically the case with Mill Creek releases. Not that the quality is necessarily "bad," but they do compress things a lot.

This new set is a total of 12 discs.

The A&E season sets of the original series were 4 discs each. Death Comes to Town was 2 discs. So, that's 22 discs right there, and that doesn't include the pilot (though that alone likely won't take up too much more additional space).

That's a difference of 10 fewer discs, which will translate to a lot of compression by comparison.

Even if I do get this, I don't see myself getting rid of my existing sets.

When the show aired in Canada, some sketches were removed and replaced with filler sketches. (Notably the Dr. Seuss bible sketch.) I expect they are referring to that. I am unaware of any omissions on the DVD sets, although they did not include those filler sketches, some of which are kind of funny. (They'd make a good bonus feature; decent rips were up on Youtube last time I checked.)

In theory, I think they could get all five bonus discs plus the pilot disc down to 1 or 2 discs. A lot of that footage is low-res VHS stuff. But, yeah, just the episodes alone were already 15 discs with 8 eps a disc, I'd hate to see what they do here.

I am not gonna buy this, but I am glad the stuff is back in print, and I'm annoyed that the pilot isn't being sold separately because it's the one disc I never picked up.

I just asked Mill Creek on Facebook if "uncensored" meant that these were the HBO broadcasts instead of the Comedy Central edits and they replied "Yes!". That sold me on this release, even though I own the original A&E megaset (plus I don't have "Death Comes To Town" yet. I also went looking for a DVD of "Brain Candy" lately and it must be out of print because it was getting pricey.

Are the A&E sets not uncensored?

Yeah, it was barely in print, and then Paramount had the Warner deal for a while, so Warner Archive put it out, but that license expired, so the Archive DVD-R is OOP, but Paramount hasn't reissued the DVD.

That said, I've bought a copy last year for $10 and a copy last month for $2 (picked up for a friend), so you just have to keep your eyes peeled.

Well, I guess I should have known better, but I really wish I hadn't spent the money on this one. I'm running out of space for my collection, so the idea of a nice small package to replace my huge complete series set was just too tempting. But the packaging is really bad. The top of the box is literally just a piece of thin cardboard that you take off the box. Not even hinged, just comes off the box. I can see it getting lost very easily. Then there are six cardboard cards loose in the box with a disc on each side. I think I can safely say this is the cheapest looking packaging I've yet seen. But I thought, well, I'll just put it in a DVD case and make my own cover. Then I took a look at the picture quality. Again, I know, I shouldn't have expected much, but the bitrate is cut in half and it's looks it. So I guess I'm keeping my old set -- I'll just put it in storage to clear shelf space. Very disappointed.

Listed bonus features are:

Original HBO pilot
Audio & video commentary on select episodes
An oral history
Interviews with the Kids & Lorne Michaels (Season 1&2)
Sketch listings, trivia, Q&A with the Kids
Archival footage never-before-seen-on TV
Original performances from the Rivoli Theater
Deleted/extended scenes and bloopers from "Death Comes to Town"
Photo & poster gallery

My other set is in storage, so I can't compare it right now. Hope this helps.

I have heard that the Mill Creek "Newsradio" set is completely missing "The Injury", I guess balancing out the fact that it was on both season 2 and season 3 when Sony (I think?) released it.

If it follows the original discs, there should be audio commentaries on all 9 of the "best of" episodes, plus 101, 105, and 108 of Death Comes to Town and a video commentary on the pilot.

These are actually the same, I think -- the two seasons just listed them differently initially.

This seems like the pilot disc bonus features.

These are basically the same thing but listed differently in the different seasons. If you want to post lengths or sketch names, I can compare them to confirm nothing has been omitted.
