Still waiting for Flicker Alley (or anyone) to dig into Argentinian noir. FA were talking about releasing Los Tallos Armargos, very keen to see that one.

I saw it at one of the recent Noir City festivals, and it's definitely due for a blu-ray release. It has a truly wonderful, full-on noir ending.

Talking Newly Acquainted Film Noir Fan

I'm fairly new to the world of Film Noir and have been having a great time getting introduced to some of these classic films and discovering some truly incredible work. I'm in my mid-30's and had previously never been exposed to any films or even actors tied to noir films. Surprisingly, I had never even seen a film with Humphrey Bogart in it up until a few months ago. I still haven't seen Casablanca, but have now watched him in The Maltese Falcon, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and In A Lonely Place. I have thoroughly enjoyed each one of these films and plan to keep watching more of his films and other classic noir films in the future. I've also watched films such as Double Indemnity, The Killing, Sunset Boulevard, The Asphalt Jungle, and Ride The Pink Horse and I intend to purchase each one of these at some point for my collection. They are classics!

I'd like to ask other film noir enthusiasts here if you might have any other recommendations I should check out next and if there are any great books worth reading as well? I've checked out a few from my local library, but I'm always interested in discovering more. Thanks in advance for your help!

Also, below is a list I've compiled of noir films I would like to watch at some point.

Blade Runner 2049 needs to be added to the list!

Would The Game be considered film noir?

Killer's Kiss which is included on the Criterion disk of The Killing. Also a foreign film noir to check out is Rififi.

If you have TCM, you can watch a ton of noir, it's how I came to love the genre.

My friend was finally able to track me down the Rocky figure to go with my Mugsy that I bought when WB used to have a store here in the Denver area many moons ago. I credit these two characters with being my first exposure to gangsters on film and my eventual love for the classic crime/noir movie genre! Now they keep an eye over my ever growing classic crime/noir movie collection.

Default Thank you!

I really appreciate the recommendations JoeBuck and kingdoxie! That looks like a great list JoeBuck and I wasn't aware of the additional film on The Killing Criterion disc. I'll have that one to look forward to once I purchase that film. It's been a lot of fun discovering all the great titles that are out there.

I've been able to check out a few of these via my local library, but I'm curious how others hunt these down to watch? I just started a subscription to Hulu Live which I've discovered includes TCM. I'm really looking forward to using this. I've also found apps such as FilmStruck and Kanopy are really good resources out there, but FilmStruck is a paid service. I know a lot of individuals pick up these films whenever Barnes & Noble has their big sales, but I don't know too many details about when those occur. Does the WBShop ever have sales as well? Thanks once again for the help!

WBShop does have sales once or twice a year during which you can buy a minimum of four titles for $11 each, which works out well for Warner Archive blu-rays.

Also, keep an eye out on DeepDiscount whenever they have 15% off coupons, because they often have great deals on Olive titles.

That pic makes me want to buy D.O.A. on DVD today! I'm tired of waiting on the Blu-ray release.

Barnes & Noble has 50% of MSRP Criterion sales in July and November. Criterion also has a 50% off one day flash sale twice a year, February and October I think. Sign up for the Criterion newsletter to be in the know.

Thanks noirjunkie and kingdoxie for the recommendations on who to follow and what retailers offer the best deals on these films. Looks like I'll have to start saving now to take advantage of a couple of the big sales that take place. Your insight is greatly appreciated!

I have begun giving up on holdouts. If there is an upgrade in the future, then I will make a decision. However, for most titles to be found around 10 bones, get it on the shelf, I say.

Dont thank me just yet! I forgot to add one of my all time favourites (like top 3), The Narrow Margin! See that one ASAP!
Will also toss on Criss Cross, Kiss Of Death, The Set Up, Act Of Violence and Panic In the Streets!

As you can see in my avatar, Out of the Past is my favorite noir. It has everything: the noir dialogue, the noir lighting, the noir stars, the noir set-up, the noir ending; it has it all in SPADES! For me, it's the very definition of classic noir. So, what I'm pretty much getting at is - it should be the very next purchase! (I envy that first viewing )

Some pretty good suggestions so far I would add The Lady from Shanghai as another to make sure to get. I don’t even like Welles or most of his films very much (yes I know it’s horrible), but this is the one film of his I love and it’s a great one IMO. That film and Gilda will make you fall in love with Rita Hayworth.

Most of the classic Noir greats are in there.

I'd also highly recommend Detour (1945).
And if you already have Sweet smell of success in there you might as well watch Whatever happened to Baby Jane?
You might also watch M and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse since they are pretty much Proto-Noir masterpieces by the Godfather of Noir himself (Fritz Lang)

I watched Street Kings recently and believe it deserves a spot on the neo-noir list. Although it underwent significant revisions, the script originated as a James Ellroy project, and it shows in everything from the character types to the plotting. It's not a perfect film, but it's definitely worth a watch for those who enjoy films in this genre.

I'm an unabashed fan of Street Kings, i watched it 3 times in a week after I first saw it. Loved pretty much everything about it
