It's a bit convoluted, but WB acquired the pre-May 1986 MGM library through the merger with Turner. Prior to that Turner had owned those titles.

Ah, okay. These rights things and who owns what is often confusing to me.

Instead of often scraping the bottom of the barrel, it's too bad that Scream won't, for example, release all of the crazy '70s and early '80s Shaw Brothers horror films.

Doesn't seem like Scream's cup of tea, but I would be all for it. I've been buying up as many of the 88 films Shaw Brothers releases the last few months.

The Hitcher 2007 already has a release doesn't it? I'm almost positive I have it.

There's a Canadian release from several years back, that might be what you're thinking of.

Once we get a Scanner Cop double-feature, I'll have to say we've demolished the barrel altogether.

Someone started a Hard To Die thread last year; I forget who but IIRC it wasn't some random poster - it was someone who usually has solid inside info so I thought this was pretty legit. Maybe it fell through?

Interestingly enough, Poltergeist II was the first film MGM released after Turner took the Pre-May 1986 library.

To everyone...

What are your favorite horror movies that involve people being trapped on islands or are simply set on islands in general?

I've always loved horror films with an island story element.

Off the top of my head, I enjoy these horror (or horror-edged) island films...

Island of Lost Souls (1942)
The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977)
I Walked with a Zombie (1943)
Isle of the Dead (1945)
American Gothic (1988)
Humongous (1982)
The Wicker Man (1973)
Shock Waves (1977)
Zombie (1979)
Tower of Evil (1972)
The Most Dangerous Game (1932)
A Game of Death (1945)
Five Dolls for an August Moon (1970)
Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things (1972)
Who Can Kill a Child? (1976)
Lord of the Flies (1963)
Mysterious Island (1961)
The Island (1980)
Battle Royale (2000)
The Food of the Gods (1976)
Shutter Island (2010)
Jurassic Park (1993)
King Kong (1933)
The Reef (2010)
The Breed (2006)
The Land That Time Forgot (1975)

I've got Island of Terror (1966) and Island of Death (1976) on my queue of Blu-rays to watch soon.
I've also heard good things about Anthropophagous (1980).

I know that I've left a few out.

Any other suggestions of island horror movies to check out?

Yep, I find that sequel highly superior to the original film

You may want to check out David Twohy's 2009 film A Perfect Getaway, Great Owl, which is a fast, engrossing thriller set on Kauai and features some terrific performances courtesy of Steve Zahn, Timothy Olyphant, Milla Jovovich and a menacing Chris Hemsworth. The scenery is beautiful and the tension is palpable, with some great twists. Don't want to spoil any surprises, but it's unpretentious, skillfully made fun and well worth a look.

Good call!

I loved A Perfect Getaway at the theater, but I nevèr got around to owning it.

Whenever I hear the term, "situational awareness", I think about that movie and start laughing.

I really enjoyed Cabin Fever 3: Patient Zero. Wasn't a fan of the original and never even saw Part 2 but I blind bought 3 based on the synopsis and it turned out to be a solid purchase. I also have an affection for island-set movies. Or TV shows. I'm a LOST superfan

The Slayer is also fun.

Twohy's an interesting fellow. Certainly not a household name nor a guy even discussed much among horror fans, but he's had his hand in several things the past couple decades. He wrote the screenplay for The Fugitive of all things, along with Waterworld and G.I. Jane.

As far as his horror offerings go, I did enjoy Pitch Black and A Perfect Getaway. I think The Arrival is one of the more intriguing "alien invasion" flicks since the early 80s. Below has a lot of interesting things about it (not the least of which is screenplay contributions from Darren Aronofksy and a pre-Hangover Zach Galifianakis) but I failed to find it very compelling.

What are your thoughts on him?

A lot of great films on this list. I'd suggest Doomwatch. Set on a remote island off the UK mainland.

I saw Island of Lost Souls on TCM just this past October and loved it. Definitely plan to pick up the Criterion Blu-ray when I get the chance.

I haven't seen The Arrival in a long time but I recall really enjoying it and thinking it was one of Charlie Sheen's best movies. I remember being surprised when Siskel & Ebert gave it two thumbs up and said it was excellent.
