Default iTunes 1080P HDR?

While going through my titles on the AppleTV TV app (titles in 4k and HDR), I noticed I had one title that when I played it, it wasn't 4k but the HDR flag kicked on.

It was the original Star Trek movie (Chris Pine).

Has anyone noticed that? Are there any other titles like that?

That's pretty common. HD titles that were ported into your library from another provider via MA that iTunes has in 4K/HDR will play in 1080p/HDR.

Really?
I have over 300 titles in iTunes, mostly from my Vudu library.

Star Trek 2009 is the only one that exhibits this behavior.

Is there another example?

I didn't think it would do HDR with non 4k content.

It's actually strange it happens with your Star Trek (2009) copy, since it's not an MA title, so I have no explanation for this one. But yes, in general every movie that ported over from an HD title in your Vudu library should have the same behavior. Which ones did you try that didn't?

HDR doesn't require 4K resolution. iTunes 4K/HDR titles also play in 1080p/HDR on recent iPhones and iPads.

Out of curiosity, in general how well do 1080p movies with HDR look?

Is it a noticable improvement in quality?

I'm still rockin' a regular 1080p set (and will be for awhile ) but I am genuinely curious.

Yes (on movies that have good HDR/DV). Personally I can't tell it apart from 4K/HDR from a normal viewing distance.

Everyone I tried that ported HDX from Vudu and have 4k available in iTunes do not display HDR.

Ghostbusters (original), Close Encounters, Unforgiven, X-Men Rogue Cut, etc.

Maybe you don't have your match content setting on? I think out of the box, AppleTV just happily plays everything with HDR on which is crazy.

Star Trek 2009 might be an anomoly since I own the original Blu-Ray and the code was probably a SD code when they made you install from the disc.

But please, if I am wrong, give me an example of a 1080p movie that plays HDR. I know on the iPhone X, they do.
I even did an experiment where I airplayed it from my iPhone X to the Apple TV to see what it would do.
It played with HDR but looked awful.
