Internet speeds have increased over the years, and certain aspects of infrastructure have improved. But by and large the data is being sent over the same kind of phone and cable wiring that has existed for many, many years. And to alchav21's point (that yes, I've criticized previously, though mainly because he tends to shoe-horn it into conversations where it's relevance is somewhere in the neighborhood of minimal to non-existent), that kind of wiring is outdated.

In order for there to be substantial improvements in this regard, that aspect of infrastructure needs to be updated across the board. And that's a lot of wiring to replace. That won't happen overnight, and at least outside of major cities and the like, I could see it taking many, many years to reach most places, if it gets to some places at all.

DOCSIS 3.1 (which will bring speeds up to 1Gbps over copper cable in some scenarios) is right around the corner. Even today's DOCSIS 3.0 deployments go up to a few hundred Mbps, which is more than UHD Blu-ray's maximum bitrate. So the last mile is actually not the bottleneck in many cases.
I still say that Copper as an Infrastructure is Obsolete, even with DOCSIS 3.1 you're talking about Gigabit Speeds. The way Technology moves now, 1 Gigabit will be too slow by the time the Roll Out finishes. That's why I say Fiber is The Future, even the Experts are still not on board. If we are talking about 4K, 8K+ Streaming you guys know the Files have to be huge, and only Fiber can accommodate those Bandwidths. So people will have to set their priorities, because Fixed Wireless will also be offered and it could work for some people. I just feel that Fiber will be the Gold Standard, and if you want it you'll have to seek it out!

I have 300 MB internet connection.

Even with that... the picture quality of most skinny bundle cable services is pretty poor. It's kind of a shame how poor it is.

In another Tech Site, DSL Reports, the question came up, "How much Bandwidth do you need?" Most people really don't know, and to further complicate things what Facilities are needed. As this question relates to Disc or Digital, I think we are in agreement in order for these Formats to be equal Bandwidth is at the Center! You guys know my answer is FTTH, and I have been in Communities where all we had was Dial-Up and when I left there was Fiber. So if you get involved with your Community, you can make a difference!

Maybe someday copper will be obsolete, but today is not that day. Fiber is not available and will not be available in the near future in much of the US.

Also Digital HD is half as much as Discs, in the UV Stores, and with the right set up and Bandwidth the Quality is Fantastic!

I wouldn't say half(at least week one). Most new titles are $19.99 in UHD(or any quality on VUDU actually) whereas if its a WB title it'll be $27.99-29.99 in store. (other providers usually cheaper)

I have Paddington 2 pre-ordered on VUDU UHD but I know I will want a physical copy on my ever shrinking shelf.

Personally I find physical to be cheaper. I normally get 4k, the blu ray and digital copy for the same price as just the digital or less normally and that's not even counting the used market that sometimes lets me get ridiculous deals. Also the resale value on my physical collections infinitly higher then the resale value of my digital collection .

You're on Blu-ray.com. Perhaps not the best place to wage war on discs and those who love them.

Please point me to a streaming service where I can get quality that is comparable to regular Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray. I'm not going to take you seriously if you find some ultra-premium service where it's $500 to rent a single film...

Yeah, and apparently, unless one happens to live in an area with really great bandwidth, you keep advocating for people to move for it, or to have to bug their local cities and government to improve it, to do all kinds of wiring/rewiring in their home as necessary, all to get the best possilbe picture out of a 4K stream (which will still come up at least somewhat short of the 4K disc counterpart), all because you consider getting up to put in/ swap out a disc to be so ancient and Archie.

Talk about walking all of the way around the earth just to get across the street.

I heard Digital matches 4K Blu-Ray if you follow the Yellow brick road and turn off at a load of bollocks street.

Give me streaming with its shitty compression, banding, dancing pixels and shoddy audio any day! Who wants 8K? I can’t see a difference between my Blu-ray and ITunes or Vudu sitting 50 feet away in my garden!

As much as I love streaming, I have yet to see it beat my discs.

And I love how streaming looks. It's getting closer, but not quite there.

You can have infinite bandwith and as you mention, it will still fall significantly short of a UHD disk. He's just a troll.
