For the September, 2016 issue of Empire (#327, Suicide Squad cover) we thought we'd compile a Greatest Film And TV Villains list with a bit of a difference. Rather than just poll the office and end up with the usual suspects at the top, we went to the villains themselves. 28 responded (two of them too late for the number crunching and the print deadline, but we won't name and shame them here), and their choices are below. They made for a fascinating final tally, as interesting for its ommissions as its inclusions. Neither Alan Rickman in Die Hard nor Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner got anywhere near the Top 50. And while there were some votes for television, no small-screen bad guys scaled those heights either.

So in 2016 he did not make the top 50. So based on that cover there is no way to assume who actually made the list. Thanos made enough of impact in the trailer to get on the cover. You use the cover to sale copies of the book.

I thought Thanos coordinated the attack on Manhattan in The Avengers.

Yes. But nowhere near the Top 50.

Can u name a villain that has had this amount of anticipation?

Only the Emperor IMO had buildup to Return of the Jedi.
He wasnt a physical threat until the end for less than a minute.
Doesnt he get credit for being behind the scenes.

And then fleshed out in the prequels.

agreed - Thanos has been implicated as pulling the strings behind many prior MCU movies...though its a bit early to add him to greatest villian lists as we have yet to see his full fruition.

Wow, I mean I love me some Loki but he doesn't deserve to be that high; at best should be near the bottom of that list but more likely not even on it.

Kylo Ren as well, what the heck.

Darth Vader is awesome for obvious reasons and is the face of villains, but I don't think he's best. There's plenty of others on that list that are more compelling and have more depth.

I'd say my personal favourite is The Joker from TDK just because of how amazing and dialled in as well as complete the performance was. Darth Vader is iconic for sure, but nobody can ever say he's "Complete" in just a single movie. The Joker in the other hand managed a full arc in one movie.

Loki isn't bad, but a villain requiring multiple movies before coming into his own.
