Default PiP on Blu-ray discs... how much freaking longer?!

For the love of god, just how long will it take for this feature to finally be implemented to blu ray?!? We've been discussing this for a year now and still, I haven't seen any blu ray disks that use this. Just how difficult is it to include this one feature?!?

Before putting discs w/ PiP on the market, manufacturers will want to test them on profile 1.1 players to be sure that everything works correctly. The mandate for all of that is Oct. 31st, so expect it around that time (or whenever profile 1.1 players hit the market, since they don't HAVE to wait for that date.)

There are a couple of things to remember regarding this idea of PIP on Blu-ray.

#1. HD-DVD was able to implement it much earlier than Blu-ray because the research and development of their technology began about a year before Blu-ray research and development began. So, they had plenty of time to incorporate it seemlessly. This is why Blu-ray seems inferior to a lot of people. But, what would have happened if they didn't release Blu-ray technology until the BD-J was ready? No Blu-ray at all until this fall would have capsized any chance they had. So, they had to release their incomplete technology in order to attempt survival.

#2. BD-J (a.k.a. BD-Java) is finally ready to be included in releases on Blu-ray sometime before Christmas 2007. (sorry, I don't have a link to the official reputable source where I read about this)

This is in fact a cheat PIP! What they did was included two versions of the film on the disc. One file with just the film, the other file with the film and PIP stamped onto it. In essence, if you were halfway through the film and wanted to start the PIP feature, you would have no choice but to start the film over with that feature enabled. BD-Java will allow you to overlay the PIP onto the film file without ever interrupting the presentation. And that's where they are having difficulties.

Its in the hardware. All bluray players released after October 31st will have to have the ability to decode 2 av streams. This is called profile 1.1

Any chance that the PS3 will have this feature somehow? or will you have to buy a new PS3 with 1.1 included?

The other thing to remember is that PiP on HD DVD is standard def only, and PiP on BD can be full res HD. I seem to recall reading that this requires a second decoder. Remember that will mean that, in the future BD can make full HD disks including PiP. This opens up possibilities such as a concert where you choose the full stage for the main display and a closeup in a window, or the closeup for the main display and the full stage in a window, or no window at all, and you choose which view you want to watch. You could switch back and forth without stopping the music. Interesting possibilities.

From what I have heard, since the PS3 is mainly software based playback and not hardware based, it is the only or one of the few currently availible Blu-Ray players capible of the new profiles when they become standards. All Sony has to do is update the system software and it should be able to handle the profile 1.1 goodies.

X2 was demonstrated to guys in mexico and it has working PIP. panasonic are currently working on PIP enabled content, ready for the profile 1.1 launch. Oh and it can be in full HD in blu ray and thats why its taken so long, so forget any Amir rantings on that.

and i still dont give a toss about it.

BD-J has been working since early this year. Pirates was the first title to use it for a "game" type implementation, but there are many menus that use it and you don't even know it.
