That is just Stranger Things though. Probably their most popular original content yet. I'm sure Netflix is pretty adamant about not doing physical media. I'd say that Stranger Things is a rarity due to it's popularity rather than it being a precedent for future releases by them.

For me it's more the question of why none of their films have been licensed out to other distributors for physical media like so many of their television series have. Perhaps none of their films have been popular enough for a distributor to be willing to pay their price.

Yeah, good chance it will play in limited release (and very limited, Netflix films typically play in like a dozen theaters) for a week, but after that, only on Netflix. No physical release and you can never own the film cause of Netflix's trash decisions when it comes to their movies.

The trailer didn’t really do it for me but I’m excited to see what Duncan Jones has been cooking up this whole time.

Please be Moon and Source Code Duncan Jones, and not Warcraft Duncan Jones. He's due for another great one. We've had a lot of futuristic looking sci-fi in the last couple of years. Ghost in the Shell, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Blade Runner 2049, Valerian, Alien: Covenant, Thor Ragnarok, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, The Orville, Star Trek: Discovery, Altered Carbon, Black Mirror, Mute, and even some of Black Panther. I'm sure there's more, but that's already a lot off the top of my head.

Duncan Jones Explains Netflix’s Importance

http://www.darkhorizons.com/duncan-j...xs-importance/

Quote:
“It’s really, really hard. There used to be a time when middle-budget movies had support from the independent arms of the studios to make films in that $20 million to $40 million range. And that just disappeared. It’s gone. Dead.

So, Netflix, Amazon, Apple, these places have started to pick up the slack. And I’m incredibly grateful for that because, on a creative level, it’s now an outlet for different kinds of movies to get made. So that’s a huge ‘pro’ in the situation.

The ‘con’ is you have to play by their rules. And as much as it hurts me sometimes to think, God, there’s never going to be a big opening of this movie, we’re never going to get the chance to show it on huge screens everywhere and do that side of it. There are not even going to be DVDs or Blu-rays. So that part of it is not ideal.

But the benefits: if Netflix hadn’t picked this up it wouldn’t have gotten made. That’s just the truth of the matter.”

Frankly, I go to the movies only three, four, five times a year, tops. The lack of theatrical release doesn't bother me much.

It's the lack of physical home video release that does. But yeah, if otherwise those movies would never get made, then it's the lesser of two evils.

I already know this isn't going to be very popular. Hardly anyone likes neo-noir cyber-punk. Blade Runner 2049 is amazing and it bombed. But this could still be good, although under-appreciated.

Just got out of the premiere for this. WOW is all I'll say for now. This would never have worked with a more "mainstream" distributor because Jones goes to some genuinely dark places that even the most revered noir stories would be afraid to touch on. All three leads give the most challenging performances of the year and their careers.
