If you're importing BDs from the UK, there is one point to bear in mind apart from the region-coding issue. The extras on a BD are usually in standard definition and will therefore be in either NTSC or PAL. If they are in PAL, your US Blu-ray player will probably not be able to play them, even though it will play the actual movie quite happily. BDs released in the UK by the major Hollywood studios will almost always have the SD extras in NTSC, as NTSC (unlike PAL) can be handled by all BD players worldwide. However, BDs released in the UK by smaller independent releasing companies (such as ITV for example) will often have the SD extras in PAL, so these are the ones you'll need to watch for if the ability to play extras is important to you. And there are just a few UK BDs that START with a PAL trailer even before displaying the menu! These ones would be completely unplayable on most US BD players. ![]() Last edited by Bruce Morrison; 01-04-2009 at 02:02 PM. |

I bought DVDs all the time from Amazon UK to play on my region-free DVD player and never had a problem. I was very impressed with their customer service.

Isn't that Escape from New York like a 480p upconvert or something? Thought I read that here or on avsforum. I passed on it for that reason, but if someone else knows differently, I'd reconsider.
Anyway, I also jumped into the amazon.uk fray last week, picked up... Zulu Predator 2 Almost Famous Batman Batman Returns Hostage Goonies |

very reliable DO NOT let Amazon convert the currency, let your CC company do it as you will save more. www.xe.com for a quick reference |

Good time to be importing too.
The pound has weakened over the past couple of months, so you are getting better value for the dollar than you did last year, or even this summer. All my family are in the UK so I have been used to getting screwed when I ordered Xmas and birthday presents from Amazon.co.uk. This time last year, if you spent 50 GBP it cost you around $100. Today it only costs you around $70. ......on my way to Amazon.co.uk |
