If you want the slipcovers, I would buy them now. Even if the price drops lower, that will probably not be for a while. By then the slipcovers will be gone, and if you want the slipcovers, it will cost you more than just buying the movies now with the slipcovers.

Hi, I am new to the board and I am looking for some advice. I have just started buying the Studio Ghibli titles recently so I am getting all the GKids editions. Are there any previous editions (DVD or Blu-ray)that I need to get, whether for different subs or special features? I am pretty sure that the Fox DVD release of My Neighbour Totoro has a different dub. And I think Disney's initial release of Kiki's Delivery Service has extra dialogue from Phil Hartman. Are there any others I should look for?

Be prepared to fork over some serious cash for that Fox Totoro DVD. Nostalgia runs deep...

I bought a Japanese dvd of My neighbor Totoro on Ebay for around $7 that has the original Fox dub. It is a region 2 dvd so you would need a region free player to watch it. The menus are all in Japanese but it is not too hard to figure it out.

check back on post #846 for a break-down of these releases with their Disney counterpart. It should be on the 43rd page in this thread.

I can read enough Japanese to make it through, it wouldn't be a problem. I actually have those same Ghibli DVDs for Only Yesterday, Ocean Waves, and Poppy Hill since those were the only unreleased ones at the time when I lived in Japan. (No BDs... I did need to eat after all. )

But most players these days can change the tracks for you on the remote without having to navigate the menus, for those that can't understand.

Thanks for that. Looks like in addition to the GKids editions, I should get:
My Neighbour Totoro (Fox)
Kiki's Delivery Service (Disney)
Tales From Earthsea (Disney)
The Secret World of Arrietty (Disney)
Spirited Away (Disney)
Howl’s Moving Castle (Disney)
Ponyo (Disney)
Castle in the Sky (Disney)
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind(Disney)

If you want the extra/adlibbed English dialogue for Kiki's Delivery Service or Castle in the Sky you'll have to track down the 2003 Disney DVDs.

Otherwise, you can find the major differences between the Disney and GKIDS Blu-rays here.

If you are looking to get the Disney versions of a couple of these because of the Introduction by John Lasseter, skip those and save your money. It's only a minute or so long, and I can paraphrase it here: 'I'm John Lasseter, and I love Hayao Miyazaki and his films. You should watch all of them. This movie is one of my favorites. It's about... Now sit back and enjoy Ghibli film.'

Agreed, I think they're an okay bonus, but they are not even close to being worth a double-dip.
Besides, there are only three that have them to begin with Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky.

As far as I can recall, the only Disney disc to have a significant extra that isn't duplicated on the subsequent GKIDS re-release is Nausicaa with its excellent 27-minute "Birth Story of Studio Ghibli" featurette. Of course you should still definitely get the GKIDS version of that release as it uses the newer, better transfer and has excellent bonus features in its own right that the Disney release lacks.

I was going through some boxes of unwatched movies I've bought from garage and estate sales for $1 a piece and under and discovered I already have:
My Neighbour Totoro (Fox & Disney editions)
Kiki's Delivery Service (Disney)
Spirited Away (Disney)
Castle in the Sky (Disney)
so that will make my search a little less expensive.
Thanks everyone who weighed in with advice!

Sweet, that was lucky! Were they all DVDs or were any of them Blu-rays?

It would be really lucky if Kiki's Delivery Service & Castle in the Sky were these editions.

They are all DVDs, but I can live with that as supplements to my Blu-rays. Kiki's Delivery Service and Castle in the Sky look identical to those pictures. And I have two copies of that Castle in the Sky edition.

One of the reasons I upgraded Disney's Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky DVDs to GKIDS' Blu-Ray/DVD combo packs actually involved my annoyance with Disney providing no option to turn those intros off, save pushing "skip" really early on. (The other reasons involved Spirited Away's more natural color scheme, and Castle in the Sky's improved subtitle timing.) I didn't replace Kiki's Delivery Service out of disappointment with GKIDS' lack of the ability to restore Phil Hartman's ad-libs, and their failure to correct the "literal" subtitles.

Good finds, you'll want to keep them. Castle has a different score on the blu-ray and I believe that DVD has the other. (There are so many editions these days.)

GKIDS' version of Castle in the Sky has both scores.

Then congratulations, those DVD editions have the original un-edited Disney dubs. Now you can just get the GKIDS Blu-rays for those two, assuming you haven't already, and not concern yourself the Disney Blu-rays. Same with Spirited Away as the DVD has the same extras, minus the full storyboards, as the Disney Blu-ray

[Show spoiler]Contains the adlibbed Phil Hartman dialogue. As well as some adjustments to the score and the original op/ending theme songs replaced with "Soaring" & "I'm Gonna Fly" by Sydney Forest.

Contains extra/adlibbed dialogue and sound effects, and the 1999 symphonic orchestral re-score. NOTE: The Disney Blu-ray has the original synthesizer score, and GKIDS' Bluray has both.

Just for the record, because I've seen this brought up several times, on the Disney Blu-rays for Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Castle in the Sky the "Introduction by John Lasseter" is optional.
It's treated as a separate bonus feature, and it doesn't automatically play before the movie.

With Pom Poko out tomorrow, I believe this is the last remaining movie for me to buy if I'm strictly interested in replacing dubtitles for actual subtitles. I also re-bought Castle in the Sky and Princess Mononoke. Now my Ghibli collection should be complete for the time being. Hopefully we'll get more shorts and pre-Ghibli efforts on Blu-ray in the US. Ronja, The Robber's Daughter would be nice too.
