Disney Star Wars Film Series - From Game of Thrones Producers

Source: StarWars.com

Quote:
GAME OF THRONES CREATORS DAVID BENIOFF AND D.B. WEISS TO WRITE AND PRODUCE A NEW SERIES OF STAR WARS FILMS

David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are going from Winterfell to a galaxy far, far away.

It was announced today that Benioff and Weiss, creators of the smash-hit, Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones, will write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

These new films will be separate from both the episodic Skywalker saga and the recently-announced trilogy being developed by Rian Johnson, writer-director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.”

“In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since,” Benioff and Weiss said in a joint statement. “We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”

No release dates have been set for the new films, and there have (thankfully) been no sightings of White Walkers around Lucasfilm.

huh... Ok. Not sure why we need two trilogies in development at once. Maybe instead of developing this stuff non-stop, they should actually try and complete one trilogy first. Not planning the ST out in advance was weird enough, now they have two trilogies in development? Maybe even more than a trilogy. It's a "series".

And what happened to the anthology films? Is this part of it? Are we really only getting just Solo and Rogue One?

I think this and the Rian Johnson one are supposed to be Anthology trilogies. Not Episodes, just three-part spinoff storylines.

Not seen a single second of GoT, but I presume this is a big deal for fans of the show.

Wouldn't it make more sense for these guys to work on the rumoured Star Wars live action series that Disney have said they wanna make? Not Lucas' canned Underworld series I understand, but a TV series of some kind...

That's not the language they've been using it to describe the films though, but you might be right. huh. I dunno. Can't say this actually excites me. In fact, if they stick to one Star Wars film a year, it actually kind of narrows the next decade of Star Wars... which isn't all that appealing. Definitely seems like 9 is the end of the skywalker saga for the foreseeable future. Not a surprise given you can't exactly have a Skywalker saga without the Dkywalkers.

The incest in Star Wars is about to get taken to a whole new level.

The Variety article says this trilogy is gonna be totally separate from the main Episodes and the Johnson trilogy. I dunno how else to interpret that other than it being a spinoff trilogy. They might stop using the word Anthology (did they ever use that, actually?) or stop branding them as A Star Wars Story, but essentially that's what they are. I don't think we're gonna see any Episodes for some time after IX.

The Sith war a millenium before TPM is canon, and ripe for exploration.

Pretty much all of the most interesting material for spinoffs happens before the Prequels. I just wonder if/when Disney/LFL will ever feel confident enough to actually take the movies into that era.

It's not the concept of them not being connected to the saga. It's that I rather enjoyed each year bringing something fresh with new characters, or new looks into characters we haven't seen before. I have no idea what DB and DBW will be doing for their films so I can't say that concept is dead. I guess I just need to hear more about what they're doing before I get too excited.

I think the release schedule will alternate between trilogies each year, so we'll get one of Rian's every two years and one of these every two years to break up the monotony. But yeah, it would be nice if there was something new in between, in case one (or both) of these ends up kinda sucking and we're not stuck with more of them for the foreseeable future lol

lol @ people suddenly not wanting anymore Star Wars movies without even hearing the concept so they can complain about that

I like Weiss and Benioff so I'm stoked, and I'm much more excited for their take on the SW universe than that HBO show Confederate so I'm glad that's on the backburner.

Hopefully this and Johnson's trilogies both show us some new, exciting parts of the universe that we haven't seen in the films yet. That's been the biggest wasted potential with the anthology films so far and I hope these deliver on that front

Legit sequel involving the original creators coming out 35 years after the original > ten billion trilogy spin-offs
